This little 9 1/2" x 17" tray is very beautiful. The wood tray has an enlaid wood border and a cut out style handle at each end. It is a souvenir from Rio. The glass is reverse painted with black and gold accents on glass. The scenery is the island, water and palm trees. The back ground seems to be a type of foil which gives the appearance of abalone or mother of pearl. Someone told me it was actually butterfly wings. This oil painting is quite old (19th century) and in its original frame. Both have taken a beating. The frame is chipped in places and pieces glued back on. Looks pretty good though. The painting has a very dark varnish and has been relined. A few missing flecks of paint too. However, all those conditions aside, the subject matter and size are terrific. If the painting, which is very well executed (not a master, but certainly an experienced artist) is signed, the signature is not readily evident... Click for details
