A rare find, this beautifully expressive religious statue is a carved wood, polychrome and gesso Baroque cherub figurine circa mid-1700's. It was bought from the estate of a family that lived for centuries in Brazil and owned a slave plantation there. It was originally acquired in a small village in the Brazilian jungle by the head of the family in the 1930’s. Most surviving pieces from the Brazilian Baroque era do not record authorship. During the period when this angel statue was carved, Port... Click for details

Egyptian souvenir - carved alabaster head of a Pharaoh

Presumably a 20th century (or possibly Victorian) souvenir from someone's tour to Egypt. Executed in the manor of a traditional canopic jar cover (but lacking the finished round bottom) and from the expected alabaster material. What could make a more appropriate travel memoir than this head of an Egyptian Pharaoh? And if you can't go soon (perhaps more unlikely in these times), maybe this decoration will take you a little closer at least in mind. Good condition. About 5 1/2 " tall. It has a litt...
