Guatemalan handicrafts are among the most appealing and decorative in the world. Here is a vintage hand made piggy bank crafted from a dried gourd. It purchased at a Central American handicrafts bazaar in Lower Manhattan in the early 1960s, when such creations were rapidly becoming available and popular. This amazing pouch was made by Native Americans, most likely the Iroquois. The front of the pouch is made of a tan, heavy cotton material, with brown and green beads applied in a floral design. All of the beadwork is hand stitched and original. The back of the pouch is a pink satin type material. Hand stitching connects the front to the back. The pouch still contains the original papoose. Figure of a woman, wearing collar, necklace, earrings, bracelets, anklets, and a dress. Carved from dark, grained wood. 9 1/2" tall, approx. 2 3/4" wide. Old mend at feet; old breaks at feet and hand; tab at top; small hole drilled in bottom. Stands independently. Probably an architectural element; from a Philippine estate.
No signs of paint. Good condition.

This hard to find lacquered box comes complete with bottom label stating: "ITEMS Made in The U.S.S.R." This term for Russia was used years ago. This nice dresser box and lid has no chips, cracks, nips, repairs or other damage. FYI Teeny, tiny black lacquer spot on edge of top and some under lid where lid fits on box.
