ORIENTAL BRASS DRAGON/GARGOYLE, LETTER OPENER
Writing Instruments: Desk Articles
Packrats Plunders
LA 100285 $48.00
Absolutely beautiful and intricate full-bodied dragon on scabbard, plus Foo-Dog or Gargoyle head on handle, and other designs embellish the top of this brass handled, brass sheathed letter opener. The embossing, or chasing on the face is very detailed and appears to be carved into the brass. I first felt that it was cast, and it may be, but the detailing seems considerably cleaner and sharper than what I normally associate with castings. It is heavy and appears to be cast brass. The back is well... Click for details

Late 17th C Brass Tobacco Box, Scenes of Women Drinking
Metalware: Brass
Richards Antiques
$750 SOLD
Very nice oval Dutch tobacco box of a form typical of the last part of the 17th century. Very well made with heavy gauge brass with engraved scenes on both sides of women drinking. There is a caption under each scene but I cannot translate from the Dutch. In researching it I found a very similar box in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City which is discussed in an article on the museum's collection of tobacco boxes by Daniëlle O. Kisluk-Grosheide, assistant curator of... Click for details

Metalware: Brass
Richards Antiques
$450 with free shipping in USA
Pair of cast square-based brass English candlesticks of classical style dating from the George III era, circa 1780. They make a nice presentation at their height of 10½ inches. The also retain their original bobeches whose gardrooned decoration happily echoes the gardrooning on the bases. These were cast in two parts; we have a photo of the top without the bobeche showing the seam lines at the corners. There is some wear to the decoration from years of polishing and a very minor repair to the co... Click for details
