This piece was probably made in Philadelphia, c1815-20, after the dynamic duo had left Boston. It has a downturned fiddle handle, square shoulders, an oversized drop on the bowl back, and a reverse rib on the back of the handle. Mono is MSA in a feathered script on front of the handle. An oval bowl is 4-14" at its widest point. The ladle is quite hefty -- over 6.5 T oz. Condition is minty.

Dating from the mid 19th century, these two coin silver spoons have New England origins. One is marked "W.J. Goodsell" with an eagle and star pseudo hallmark for the Hartford, Connecticut jeweler, and the other is stamped "Harwood Brothers" for the Boston firm. Both pieces have "Tipt" ends and shell bowls, but each is distinct in how these are presented.

The Harwood is the longer, at 6 11/16", and slightly heavier at .8 T. oz., compared to the Goodsell which measures 6 7/16" and weighs .6... Click for details

Sometimes misidentified as a cracker scoop, this berry spoon or shovel form was a popular American form in the mid 19th century.

This 9" long, nearly 2.7 T. oz., twist stem, example was produced by New York's Albert Coles. It was one of several designs in this genre that Coles offered.

It is die struck and portrays a raised classical warrior figure surrounded by detailing that has an architectural quality to it.

Dating from the mid 19th century, it is a large, 8 9/16" long, nearly 1.5 T. oz., table or serving spoon in very fine condition.

Coin silver sauce ladle by James Byrne, a silversmith who worked in New York City from 1789-1797 and in Elizabethtown, New Jersey thereafter (c. 1795-1800), 7-¼” long, 2-¼” shallow circular bowl, broad drop, downturned oval end handle with bright cut decoration down center and making oval cartouche at end containing feather script monogram “MD”, clearly marked in script “J. Byrne” (pellet raised) in shaped punch.

The second feature is the engine turned surface of the blade. One of Gorham's earliest line patterns, "Josephine" is a leaf motif that has contemporaneous parallels with designs produced by William Gale and James Watts.

This example is a large, 8 3/4" long, 1.8 T. oz., berry spoon. It has a scallop shell bowl that has an essentially intact gold wash finish on the interior and an enlarged repeat of the leaf motif on the backside heel. The handle has a fancy, feathered script "JL" monogram.

Measuring 6 7/8" long and weighing 1.0 T. oz., this coin silver preserve spoon is stamped "F&H" for Boston's Farrington & Hunnewell.

It also carries the retail name of "L.C. Bailey" for Lyman Clapp Bailey of Calais, Maine, which borders Canada and is as about far east as any settled place in the United States.

It is a strikingly fine example of mid 19th century precision bright cut silver that exhibits the same mirror like qualities as diamond facets.

Dating from the mid 19th century and marked "Duhme," a premier Cincinnati and Midwestern firm, this coin silver master butter knife measures 7 1/4" long and weighs just over 1.0 T. oz.

It has a twisted shank, with a broad, oval handle end. This is precisely engraved in a leaf and scroll period design and engraved "Craig" in script in the center area. The blade has a scalloped upper edge and is also engraved along the top margin. The backside is plain, save for the mark.

Dating from very early in the history of the company founded in 1853, this 6 5/8" long, just over .8 T. oz., preserve spoon is stamped "Wm. B. Durgin" and "Pure Coin."

Apparently it was a line pattern given that a variety of pieces still show up, but is unnamed. It has a flat handle with a chiseled looking margin and an extensively bright cut and engraving surface. The backside is plain, save for the marks. The bowl is a shell form with scalloped edges.

A pattern that was made in both coin and sterling silver, "Strawberry" originated with William B. Durgin. This was one of the first die struck designs produced by the company he founded in 1853.

These tongs are marked once on each arm with the maker's mark of Thomas Alexander Boullt (1818-1876), a well-known Hagerstown silversmith, jeweler, watchmaker and clockmaker. A standard pattern with slight variations from maker to maker, "Olive" was a stand out design in the mid 19th century. Gorham produced its own variant in 1865 and took it further afield from than other makers of the period.
