Over the years, we've handled many many pieces of Martelé, and if you dear reader will forgive me for a bit of crudeness, most of them are "trashed." Specifically, the detail is severely worn away, leaving the beauty of the overall design still appreciable but no longer intact.

Hallmarked for the London firm of C.S. Harris & Sons Ltd, 1893-94, described in "Jackson's Hallmarks" as a "maker of . . . usually very fine copies of earlier pieces," this solid sterling silver trophy is indeed Georgian in inspiration, with scrolled arms and a banded body.

Standing on a footed base that is 3" in diameter, it measures 4 3/4" high to the rim and 5 1/8" to the top of the handles, is 4" across rim to rim, has a maximum span of 7 1/4" handle to handle, and weighs a heavy 14.8 T.... Click for details

A lofty item, this sugar caster, aka muffineer, stands 8" tall on a footed base that is 2 1/2" in diameter. Its substantial 6.8 T. oz. weight is commensurate with its size.

English "Georgian" in style, it has a bulbous body with a tall, fitted sleeve, tiered lid surmounted by an urn shaped finial.

The lid has a series of swirled, patterned piercings offset by fine engraved bands.

Meyers of Newark, New Jersey, working dates 1932-58, this tapered and slightly splayed, handleless cup or small beaker stands 2" tall, has a top span of 2 1/2", a bottom diameter of 1 5/8", and weighs a substantial 3.1 T. oz.

This item was also offered with an accompanying dish or saucer, with matching figures applied on the rim.

Evidencing the imaginative design impulses of the Aesthetic mode, this circa 1880 5" diameter, 4.2 T. oz., possibly olive, bowl possesses several outstanding features.

It is double scallop shaped, with undulating walls with a flange rim. There are six smaller lobes with channels that run to the flat bottom base.

The interior retains a portion of its original gold wash finish.

A 3 1/4" by 2 5/8" oval that stands 3" high to the rim, 4" to the tip of the finial, this tea caddy weighs a substantial 6.1 T. oz.

It is stamped on the bottom with a clear but unidentified maker's mark (see image 2), and the words "Sterling" and "Hand Made."

Plain walled, it has a flat bottom and gadroon top rim and a fancy line script "RMW" monogram on the front facing side.

An unusual item perhaps intended for sugar, candy, or even a dresser item, this round bowl measures 4 1/2" in diameter and stands 2 1/4" high to the rim.

The faceted base is molded glass while the top is silver attached to an applied rim. The lid is divided in half and is fitted with a hinge and knob allowing it to open fully.

The fixed side of the top is engraved with an Old English "S" monogram.

Measuring 6 1/2" in diameter and very weighty at 4.8 T. oz., this child's plate is stamped with Gorham's "lion, anchor, G" emblem on the backside, along with "Sterling" and the model number "5240."

It has a 1 1/8" wide, rimmed border that is divided into fourteen panels. Each of these is acid etched in a scene that portrays a different children's rhyme.

Standing 3 1/4" tall on a 2 3/8" wide rimmed base, this mustard pot is a very decorative item.

The holder is sterling silver with a lattice body with beaded detailing on the upper rim and handle. The 2" diameter lid has a raised flower, perhaps wild rose, and leafy scroll design with a solid thumb grip.

The liner is ruby red glass and is original to the piece, as is the 3 3/4" long, sterling bead and twist pattern mustard ladle. The total weight of the silver is 2.5 T. oz.

Made by the Meriden Britannia Company, it dates circa 1895, and carries the firm's emblem, "Sterling," and the model number "221" stamped on the underside.

A matched pair, this sugar and creamer were a 25th anniversary gift, as indicated by the "ABF to MFCC 1859-1884" inscribed on the sidewall of each piece.

Made by Tiffany, they are holloware accompaniments to the company's 1872 "Persian" flatware line. The Moorish pattern is replicated on the two handles of the bowl and the single handle of the creamer, with a modification of the design appearing on the banding that encircles both the top and bottom of each piece.

Made for Colonial Williamsburg as part of an exclusive line, it is described in a 1976 catalog as "A design of classic simplicity copied from a bowl made by Philip Syng (1676-1739)."

Relatively short-lived, born circa 1783, died 1835, Harvey Lewis nonetheless made a significant imprint in the realm of American silver smithing. His producing years, all in Philadelphia where he lived, extended from 1802-27.

Examples of his work can be found at Yale University, Winterthur, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. A pair of canns, i.e. mugs, larger than but otherwise matching this one, are illustrated online, with a date of circa 1815, and identified as in a private collection.... Click for details
