Coffin-end serving spoon, c1810-15 -- no shoulders, no drop, light reverse rib, feathered script mono G on front; 8-7/8" long. Condition is excellent, near mint. We bought this piece several months ago: Warner, should be a snap to find him; probably Delaware, right? Maybe Philadelphia -- maybe a stray southern maker. Well, maybe, but we haven't located him yet. Will keep looking.

Mustard ladle, c1810-20 -- This is a 4-3/4"-long piece with an extraordinarily long (2-1/2") fiddle; it has square shoulders and a tiny (3/4") oval bowl. Mono, as shown, is T E C in feathered script. One would think that a smith, or a partnership of smithies, with a 3-letter mark would be easy to find. Not so. We went thru the B's in Kovel and other silver books to no avail. Then we did the same with the A's, thinking it might be a 3-person partnership. Still no luck. Shame, that. It's a... Click for details

We come across these small coffin-end ladles -- mustards, gravy, sauce -- from time to time and they all seem to be made in New England, particularly in the City of Providence. It is for that reason (and the lack of any other candidate) that we attribute this neat piece to William Burr (see pix of WB mark). This ladle has a cut-cornered fiddle end and is 5-1/4" long. The mono is C L in feathered script. Condition is excellent throughout.

Marked S.C. SPAULDING; also marked JANESVILL (no E) WIS, and also COIN. Spaulding was the retailer of this piece. It's also struck with 3 pseudos, the marks of the maker, Hall, Hewson in Albany. Description as follows: forward-tipt fiddle handle, flared shoulders, script mono Gray on front of handle, 8-5/8" long. It is in excellent condition, bowl unworn. Wisconsin coin silver - especially when it is self-identified, so to speak - is extremely rare, almost unheard of; as a matter of fact,... Click for details

On the basis of style (wide stubby fiddle handle and unusual high angular shoulders), we've attributed this piece to B.B. Hastings of Cleveland. The ladle is 6-1/8" long and the mono is I.A.A. in feathered script. Aside from an incompletely struck mark, condition is excellent.
