Introduced in 1861, and initially made to a coin silver standard then continued in production beyond the conversion to sterling in 1868, Gorham's Grecian features a solid tubular stem capped with an elaborated anthemion or palmette.

This 7 1/2" long, 1.9 T. oz., gravy ladle is an early piece, marked "Coin," along with "Patent 1861."

The handle backside is engraved with an "H.A.B" monogram in Old English lettering.

Germon (1751-1829), whose work is featured in many public collections but which is rarely seen in the marketplace. The maker's mark or retailer's mark of William Boning on this piece is W.BONING incuse; it is one of two William Boning marks recently discovered, the other being in a rectangular punch. Offered is a nice American coin silver tablespoon initialed CY in period script and marked with a fineness mark and Conrad's mark. This piece measures about 8 1/4 inches in length and weighs about 36 grams. It is in good condition overall, with some bumping to the bow but no splits or repairs. Offered is a scarce and attractive pair of 19th Century neoclassical Italian silver spoons, by a silversmith named Castagna or Castagma, who I've not found anything about. In addition to the maker's mark, each spoon is marked with a fineness mark of 800. These spoons probably date to the second or third quarter of the 19th Century, judging by the marks and the style. Offered is a nice American coin silver cream ladle marked PACKARD in moderately crude letters in a rectangular punch; this maker's mark has been attributed to Jonathan Packard (1789-1854), who worked in Northampton, MA from 1811-14, in Albany, NY from 1814-18, and in Rochester, NY from 1819-54. He met an untimely end in 1854 when he was beaten to death by three drunken men while on his way home.

Offered is a nice Southern coin silver master salt spoon initialed "RK" in period script and marked by Raleigh jeweler William H. Thompson, working in that vicinity in the 1850s and 1860s. This piece measures about 3 5/8 inches in length, and weighs about 6 grams. Condition overall is very good, with some stubborn tarnish but no dents, splits or repairs. A popular mid 19th century motif, the (acanthus) Leaf pattern of this c. 1865, 7 1/4" long, 1.3 T. oz., coin silver master butter knife was produced by a number of makers, including Albert Coles, whose "eagle, AC, bust" emblem appears on the handle backside.

Matched items, each of these two master butter knives measures 6 1/4" long with the pair weighing 1.3 T. oz.

Marked "Coin," they are without a maker's identification. The style suggests an 1860s date and the work is clearly that of a capable (American) manufacturer.

They have twisted shanks leading to broad, flat, upturned handle ends that are extensively and finely bright cut engraved on the top sides. Each piece has a feathered script "AMF" monogram.

Offered is an interesting American coin silver teaspoon circa 1848, in a pattern I haven't seen before, and which seems to be quite rare. This pattern was apparently patented in 1848, judging by the mark on the spoon, and the spoon was retailed by John and James Cox of New York, NY. The manufacturer may or may not have used a "W" mark, which has a journeyman's mark or tally mark next to it.
