Dating from 1885, Gorham's "Old Masters" scarcely has any parallels in the realm of American sterling silver flatware. Each piece in the line, with some duplication, features a different, renowned figure from the realm of the classical arts. The handles are cast and individually designed with all aspects of the shank complimentary of the bust of whatever figure surmounts the end of that handle.

The figure in the instance of this 7 3/4" long, exceptional weight 2.2 T. oz., master butter... Click for details

circa 1816, length 10 3/4 inches, wear to pattern, minor dents and other sins, engraved with crest and motto "Tria Juncto in Uno," four by maker S P and two by someone else.

Knives are always tough to find in antique King's and related patterns. These are especially well suited to use, with their stainless blades by Robert F. Mosley of Sheffield which look to have been done in the 1930's. About as close as we get to shabby chic...

It has a down turned handle with a reverse tipt end, and an exposed drop on the bowl. The front is monogrammed "AMB" in a feathered script. The condition is very good. DeMatteo produced objects for Colonial Williamsburg, and often used designs by the 18th century Virginia silversmith James Geddy as his inspiration. These were marked I ˖ G in addition to the usual trademarks (see third photo).

Over the years, we've bought and sold more than a few items by the DeMatteo family. This is unquestionably the best we've had the privilege to offer.

Of a singular design, this 9 1/4" long, .9 T. oz., c. 1900, olive or pickle fork is marked "Geo. C. Shreve & Co." and "Sterling." This premier San Francisco firm was known for its Arts & Crafts and hammered designs, and this essentially falls within that tent. It has a solid, four sided handle that is joined by a ball at the lower end to the two tine fork. The tines are lengthy at 2", slender, and finished in a gold wash. Apart from a slight bit of waviness in one tine, there is no visible... Click for details

They weigh a combined .7 T. oz. and measure 4 3/4".

Dating from 1880, Whiting's "Persian" is a Moresque design deriving from the same sensibilities that generated Tiffany's pattern of the same name, as well as Whiting's own "Arabesque" and Gorham's "Hindostanee" among others. This example is a 7 1/2" long, 1.5 T. oz., preserve or jelly spoon. It has the plum-shaped bowl with flanged rim and central rib that Whiting used across several lines of the period. Persian has a reserve area at the front of the handle which is a natural location for an... Click for details

While unnamed, this c. 1870 design by George Sharp is quite similar to Gorham's "Louis XIV" and Knowles' "Emperor," both of the same period. It is double die struck, meaning the pattern appears on both sides of the piece. This example is a 6 1/2" long, 1.2 T. oz. sauce ladle. The handle is slender and elongated looking, and is joined to a 2" diameter, round shell bowl with a scalloped rim and a flat bottom. These are particularly choice examples, extra heavy, with excellent detail and die depth. To my eye, this is one of R & B's most attractive designs. For further discussion of what makes a pattern aesthetically successful, see Design New England, November-December 2012, pp. 60-64
