Fancy Bowl Victorian Sterling Berry Spoon

The plain, reverse tipt handle on this 8 9/16" long, approximately 1.7 T. oz., berry spoon belies its highly decorative bowl. Marked only "Sterling," the plum-shaped bowl with flanged shoulders was commonly used by Whiting and Knowles. Both of those firms also commonly left pieces unmarked, so one of those two companies is the likely maker. It dates c. 1870-80. The bowl has a frosted, pale gold finish and is precisely bright cut and engraved on both the interior and flanged edges. The handle... Click for details

Chrysanthemum patterns were wildly popular in the 1880's. Tiffany, Gorham, Shiebler and other manufacturers all produced them, but this is certainly among the best of these designs.

Matched Pair Gorham No. 88 Sterling Jelly Spoons

The design on these two, matched spoons is commonly referred as Lily, Lily of the Valley, and Number 88 (which usually appears on the backside of this 1870 design). They are 7 1/8" long, weighty, and have the same "MHO" period monogram on the reverses. The pattern is intricate and has open work on the top of the handle. It seems to reflect similar design inspiration as Gorham's Egyptian Revival Lotus of the same period. The stylized shell-shaped bowls have a frosted finish on the interior,... Click for details

Gorham No. 276
click for details
Measuring 7 11/16" long, this three tine fork was a specialty item made by Gorham. It is stamped with that company's lion, anchor, G hallmark, Sterling, and the number 276. It may be for pickles, or some sources suggest it is a cheese fork. The motif is classically inspired, featuring a replica of a Greek coin on the tip of the handle. One side of this has a head in profile and the other a Parthenon-like structure. The stem is twisted and "roughened," perhaps to suggest age or antiquity. ... Click for details

Whiting's and Gorham's Lotus are nearly twin patterns, although there are subtle differences. The primary distinguishing feature is the number of lotus fronds in the design, Gorham having three and Whiting, as with this piece, having five.

They are both products of the c. 1870 Egyptian Revival movement and are patterns that have never lost appeal.

This example is a 10 1/8" long, 2.0 T. oz., ice cream server.

It is in immaculate condition, showing essentially no wear, and is without... Click for details
