Gorham No. 435 Sterling Cast Bon Bon Spoon

Model number "435" made by Gorham, a similar companion piece numbered "437" appears in the company catalog of 1892 (see image 2). Measuring 4 3/8" long and weighing just under 1.0 T. oz., this form is sometimes identified as a tea caddy spoon, but the catalog illustration establishes it as a bon bon spoon. Such pieces were higher order in the Gorham stable and extra effort was invested in their design and production. They are also generally heavier than comparable pieces in full line... length 9 5/8 inches, weight 4.86 Troy ounces, monogrammed "M" (obverse, Old English), gilt tines with a bit of table wear to gold wash on underside but excellent overall condition.

Most American silver manufacturers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries offered some variant of the Chrysanthemum pattern. As faithful readers of our little web page will know, here is my favorite one of them all. Perhaps it was their location (in Concord) near the wilderness of New Hampshire... Click for details

Items such of this 8 3/8" long table or serving spoon are rapidly disappearing from the open market place given the surge in scrapping old silver in recent years. Part of the appeal of a pattern line like 1896's "Marchel Niel" by Durgin, lies in its exceptional weight, 2.4 T. oz. in this instance, and that amount of silver has high value simply as a commodity, i.e. for "melt."

Independent from its heft, Marechal Niel is appealing because it is an outstanding design. It offers a high... Click for details

Measuring 8 1/2" long and weighing 1.5 T. oz., this sterling silver berry spoon carries a retail stamp for "J.S. MacDonald" of Baltimore, but no maker's mark. It has a stylized diamond cut engraved handle with a satin matte background. There is a fancy "CMK" script monogram. The bowl is ovoid with notched edges. It has a floral engraved, again bright cut, design on the interior set against a pale gold satin matte surface. The back of the handle has a reverse tipt end and is otherwise plain... Measuring 5 5/8" long and weighing a relatively heavy 1.0 T. oz., this three tine fork is suggestive of an oyster or seafood fork, but has a different and singular tine configuration.

There are three tines, with the lower one exceptionally wide and having a beveled edge, while the other two are narrow and pointed. Two function possibilities are an escargot or a cheese fork.

The maker was Dominick and Haff and the pattern is that company's old version "Louis XIV" dating from 1888. It is... Click for details

Figural Wendell

Wendell's late 19th century "Ariel" features a cherubic-looking figure set against a dense, decorative background. It is highly reminiscent of Dominick & Haff's "Labors of Cupid," which it predates by five years, 1895 vs. 1900.

This example is a 6 1/4" long, heavy, 1.7 T. oz. sauce ladle. The 1 3/4" diameter, 5/8" deep, bowl has flanged shoulders and a scalloped and patterned outer border.

This is in immaculate condition and without a monogram or removal. There is no polishing wear,... Click for details

length 7 1/4 inches, weight 2.69 oz. Troy, monogrammed as shown in photo number three, retailed by Daniel Low, some very minor stains on bowl but excellent overall condition.

Don't get me wrong, we love a nice 1820's piece of S.O.W. ever so much, but you'll never see this amount of detail in a sheaf which some brawny silversmith made by whacking a swage with a big hammer.

A known but unnamed pattern by Durgin, this design is French Rococo in manner. It is highly detailed, featuring scrolls, acanthus leaves, florettes, and beading arranged asymmetrically on the handle. The pattern repeats with slight variation on the backside.

This example is a 9 1/4" long, 3.8 T. oz., asparagus server. The shoulders of the serving end follow after the overall design with an added floral swag with bow. The crossbars joining the five tines are leafy scrolls. The serving... Click for details

Stamped with the Gorham lion, anchor, G, "Pat. 71," and "Sterling," this 5 5/8" long, 1.0 T. oz., cream ladle is a fine period piece.

The pattern is "Corinthian," which falls generally in a Moresque style with, as implied by the name, a nod toward classical Greek design.

The piece is a form commonly referred to as a "bucket ladle." The term derives from the shape of the bowl which is this case is 7/8" deep and 1 1/2" across at the top. The sidewalls are tapered and the interior is... Click for details

Gorham Colonial Solid Sterling Ice Cream Knife

What design elements prompted Gorham to adopt the name "Colonial" for this 1885 design is something of a mystery because it does not follow after any conventional colonial motif.

The main feature of the pattern is striping that runs up about two-thirds of the handle. This is more subtle than it appears, as the surface alternates between convex and concave and suggests banding, perhaps of a naturalistic material such as bamboo. This in turn implies an Aesthetic influence, which would be... Click for details

Measuring 7 7/8" long and weighing 2.2 T. oz. this is a small berry spoon.

The pattern is Reed & Barton's enduring Art Nouveau "Les Six Fleurs." It is an original piece, to be distinguished from contemporary reissues and re-strikes.

There is a flowing script "FCH" on the reverse.

The condition is outstanding. There is no wear on the high relief and precisely detailed floral portraiture which is a hallmark of this pattern. Marks are the Reed & Barton emblem, Sterling, and the words... Click for details
