2107dd   $100.00

Identified specifically for use with lettuce, as opposed to salad, this matching spoon and fork form was a reflection of the 19th century's inclination to devise specialized implements for individual foods.

This matching pair was made by Towle in its 1893 "Canterbury" pattern. The spoon measures 9" long and weighs 1.2 T. oz., while the fork is slightly shorter at 8 7/8" and lighter at 1.0 T. oz. Both items have matte finish, gold washed serving ends and are engraved in script "1865-1915"... Click for details

Measuring 6 3/16" long and weighing a substantial 1.2 T. oz., this spoon is stamped "Tiffany & Co.," "Sterling," and with a lower case "m," used 1907-47. Given its Arts & Crafts style of this, it no doubt traces to early in this range.

It is engraved "Richard" in script on the handle.

This 6" long, approximately 1.0 T. oz., three tine pickle fork is a place piece and not a serving item. It is an early, and apparently not readily found, form in Towle's "Old Colonial" line.

This example is in immaculate condition and is without a monogram or removal. It retains an original gold wash, which apart from some rubbing wear on the backside where the heel rests, is fully intact.

Marks are the Towle emblem, "Sterling," "925/1000," and an imprinted "Pat. 1895."

An elegant turn of the 20th century design, Durgin's "New Queens" incorporates double shell and scroll elements that reflect its classical roots. The decorative success of the pattern is enhanced by the finely lined and richly textured, gold washed (front and back sides), bowl that is employed in this 4 7/8" long, relatively heavy .8 T. oz., tea caddy spoon.

This is an especially fine example without a monogram or monogram removal. There is no polishing wear or damage, and the finish is... Click for details

Stamped "Ball, Black & Co." for the prominent mid 19th century firm, this pie server is large scaled. It measures 10" long overall and is exceptionally heavy at 3.8 T. oz. The triangular blade is 4 1/2" long and 3" at the widest.

The handle has a period "Bead" pattern front, and curiously a "Thread" pattern on the reverse. There is a fancy, feathered script "CAC" monogram on the obverse, and what appears to be a "CAP" monogram on the reverse. Such details always raise the question of... Click for details

Durgin "Louis XV" Sterling Silver Lettuce Fork
Silver : Sterling : Flatware

1908f   $60.00

Issued in 1891, Durgin's "Louis XV" is a dense, rococo design that reflects quite a different, and arguably more engaging, interpretation of the motif from Whiting's much simpler pattern of the same name produced in the same year.

This example is a 7 7/8" long, relatively weighty 1.0 T. oz., lettuce fork. It originally had an overall gold finish, but much of that was polished away and now shows only partly on the handle. It remains essentially intact on the three tine serving end.
