Offered is a fine Georgian English sterling silver wine label or bottle ticket in the "two putti" style, first introduced by Sandilands Drinkwater in the mid-18th Century, and widely copied by 18th and 19th Century specialist label makers thereafter. This piece is hallmarked for 1807, and the maker's mark of J.A may be for Joseph Angell. This piece measures about 2 3/8 inches across and weighs about 28 grams. 2691f   $150.00

Issued in 1901 at the beginning of the Edwardian Period in English history, Frank Smith's "Federal Cotillion" is also known as "Edward VII." It is a relatively high style "Kings" pattern that with only minor differences is identical to Whiting's "King Edward," also introduced in 1901, suggesting that American silver manufacturers were pivoting off the end of the Victorian era in their design offerings.

This group is a matched set of eight oyster or seafood cocktail forks. Each one measures... Click for details

Durgin "New Art" Lily Large Sterling Silver Preserve Spoon

2687f   $385.00

Arguably the line by which all other Art Nouveau floral designs are measured, Durgin's 1900 "New Art" embodies the exuberance, lushness, and freedom of expression that characterizes this style mode.

The scale of pieces in this pattern is large, as evidenced by the fact that this 8 3/4" long, very heavy at 4.7 T. oz., piece is identified as a preserve spoon, when it is actually the size of a typical berry spoon.

Multi-motif, the portraiture on this is lily. The blossoms and leaves fold... Click for details

2659f   $225.00

A large item measuring 8 1/2" long and weighing a robust 3.1 T. oz., this serving piece is variously identified as a pea, vegetable, or ice spoon. The determinative characteristic of this form is a generously-sized, reticulated bowl, and indeed that is the case with this example in Gorham's "Imperial Chrysanthemum." The piercing in this instance is a leaf design.

The late 19th century pattern is expressive, portraying an abundance of chrysanthemum blossoms and leaves arrayed on both front... Click for details

Dating from 1872, Gorham's "Corinthian" embodies the Classical Revival sensibilities of the period. Architectural in style, it incorporates an anthemion leaf on the handle surmounted by leafy tracery.

The 3/4" deep, nearly round, 2" diameter, bowl with a central vee, flanged shoulders, and slightly tipped lip, on this 6" long, 1.2 T. oz., sauce ladle is engraved in a Palmetto leaf motif that is evocative of Egyptian Revival style. Delicate and slender, this lettuce fork is extra long at 9 5/16". It weighs just over 1.0 T. oz.

The pattern is Whiting's late 19th century "Dresden," which is a charming and intricate floral design that features what appear to be forget-me-not blossoms and leaves trailing up the handle. A shell surmounts the handle tip and there is acanthus leaf detailing in other areas. The pattern repeats with slight variation on both sides of the handle.

The lower portion of the handle is plain... Click for details

2610f   $195.00

This example of Victorian period grape shears or, as period catalogues identify them, scissors, are of a quality that set the bar for such pieces. They excel in terms of design, manufacture, and material.

The first factor that stands out is that they are made of solid sterling silver. Grape shears typically have steel cutters, while these are clearly marked on the backside of the lower blade "Howard & Co.," the date "1892," "New York," and "Sterling." To be sure, they do have darkened... Click for details

This 7 7/8" long, approximately 2.0 t. oz., serving spoon was produced or adapted by San Francisco's George C. Shreve.

It is apparently modified from a Whiting "Louis XV" pattern. It retains the "Sterling" and "Pat. 1891" marks of that line, accompanied by "Geo. C. Shreve & Co.," and dates between 1891 and 1894, when the name of the firm became "Shreve & Co."
