Born in Winchester, England (1839), Mockford trained as a miller. He originally established himself in Tompkins County as a baker and flour merchant, then a jewelery pedlar, and finally a retail jeweler. For a peek back in time at how his mill would have looked in 1890, see photo number five.

Elizabethtown NJ circa 1826, length 12 7/8 inches, weight 7.44 Troy ounces, excellent condition, monogrammed "MSM" in conjoined period script with flourishes (obverse) and "1801" (reverse), round downturned end with short back midrib, round chamfered shoulders and rounded drop.

Including 8 cups, all by W. Floral repousse on base, decoration on shaft, handle. Height 8-3/4", maximum horizontal dimension 7-3/4". Weight 35.9 troy ounces. No monogram. Overall condition is excellent except that we assume it at one time had egg spoons. Mark condition is excellent. We obtained this set from the estate of Crosby Forbes, author of the pioneering book on Chinese Export silver and descendant of the Forbes family who were prominent in the China trade. The inscription in a reserve on the front says: "Presented/to/John L.Cook/as a token of/respect by the operatives in/the Carding Room of the/P.S.Factory/Portsmouth NH./Sept.15,1853".
