Polhamus for Tiffany
click for details
Originally a retailer only and not a manufacturer, Tiffany relied upon a limited number of manufacturers to provide its store with silver flatware.

One of the favored suppliers was New York City's John Polhamus, who was the producer of this 7" long, heavy at 1.6 T. oz., dessert or place spoon.

The pattern is "Ionic," patented in 1860, as marked on the reverse. Other identifiers include "J.P.," "Tiffany & Co.," and "Sterling." Tiffany was early to require a sterling, rather than the... Click for details

a rare, diminutive example, 3 1/8 X 1 7/8 X just under 1/2 inches, weight 2.3 Troy ounces.

It is an unusual pleasure to find an object which is engraved ("J. Diprose, EsqR / from J.J.G. Bombay") with both a name and a location, to lend it an added sense of history.

This item is superb in both design and execution. Though we always hesitate to say "flawless condition," one would be hard-pressed to find fault. If your collection wants for a representative from Victorian era silver... Click for details

click for details
Working with his brother, Alonzo, in Albany, New York, 1831-38, Chauncey Johnson is identified as a silversmith and jeweler.

In addition to the "C. & A.W. Johnson" for that partnership stamped on this 8 1/2" long, 1.5 T. oz., tablespoon, it also carries an "eagle, D, bust" pseudo hallmark. In his benchmark work on these marks, McGrew associates this with Hall and Hewson, also of Albany.

A straightforward, down-turned "Reverse Tipt," design, this is akin to much production of the period. ... Click for details

Gorham catalogs either side of the turn of the twentieth century illustrate items similar to this 9" diameter, 3 1/2" piece and identify them as "berry bowls." They have brilliant cut glass bodies with applied sterling silver rims.

This example is model number "D453M" as imprinted on the edge of the rim. Other marks include Gorham's "lion, anchor, G" emblem, "Sterling," and a date symbol for 1903. The rim is plain save for a beaded edge where it abuts the glass.

Circa 1860 Twist Handle Philadelphia Coin Soup Ladle

This 11 1/2" long, just under 4.2 T. oz., soup ladle incorporates several particularly appealing elements favored in mid 19th century American silver originating in sophisticated urban centers. In that regard, while marked only "Coin," the style of this piece rather conclusively suggests a Philadelphia source such as James Watts or one of his contemporaries.

It has a robust, twisted shank with a broad, scalloped edge, terminal. This is artfully engraved and bright cut in a period design... Click for details
