A companion piece of hollow ware for Tiffany's 1872 "Persian" pattern, the design on this 8" top diameter, 4" across the bottom, 5 1/4" tall, 14.9 T. oz., footed bowl, aka tazza or compote, incorporates the same Moorish motif that is found on the flatware line.

The entire piece is characterized by elegant, clean lines, and bright, mirror-like surfaces.

The bowl itself is 2 1/4" deep and has a domed base where it joins with the foot. The outer sidewall has a flowing, line script, "CAS"... Click for details

To a European scale, each of these two, matching, forks measures 8" long. They are very heavy at 5.2 T. oz. the pair.

The pattern is a "Tipt," with beveled edges along the margins of the handles. The ends are slightly upturned, and the tines are long and tapered.

Each piece is fully marked with a "lion" for sterling, a "leopard's face" for London, a date letter "e" for 1834-35, a duty mark, and "WJ" for maker William Johnson.

Sources indicate that Charles C. Shaver and Henry S. Brown, the makers of this 6 1/2" long, 1.0 T. oz., ladle formed their partnership in 1856.

The partnership only lasted two years as Shaver sold out to Brown in 1858, but whose interest he bought back in 1863. All this history indicates the mark on this piece is rarer than most associated with the Shaver name.

Produced in the second quarter of the 19th century in New York City, this 8 1/2" long, weighty at 1.8 T. oz., coin silver table or serving spoon, is an extremely well-made piece.

It has a "Tipt" end, rounded and heavily beveled shoulders, and a pointed end bowl.

The backside of the handle has an elegantly rendered, feathered script "TD" monogram.

This matching spoon and fork are for serving lettuce, as opposed to salad, and are a reflection of the particularity of the Victorian table.

The pattern is "Cantebury" by Towle, issued in 1893. The spoon measures 9" long and weighs 1.2 T. oz., while the fork is slightly shorter at 8 7/8" and lighter at 1.0 T. oz.

Both items have matte finish, gold washed serving ends and are engraved in script "1865-1915" on the handle reverses. There are no monograms or removals on the fronts.

Dating from 1861, "Beaded" is one of Gorham's earliest line patterns and was produced for a considerable period of time. As such, it was made in both coin and sterling silver. This example is the latter.

A large piece measuring 9 1/8" long and weighing a substantial 1.8 T. oz., this spoon dates c. 1835.

It is stamped "Canfield," referencing one of three (later two) brothers, Ira, William and Jared, the majority of whose working years were spent as partners.

The Baltimore Museum of Art reference work, "Maryland Silver," assigns this particular mark to Ira, located in Haddam, Connecticut until c. 1834, and Baltimore after that, where the partnership was situated.

This piece is struck twice on one arm with a maker's mark of "E", often assigned to James Erskine of Aberdeen; the other arm bears a hallmark that looks like a circle or ring. Offered is a lovely pair of early American coin silver sugar tongs marked Gordon in italicized lettering on each arm; this mark resembles one of the maker's marks attributed by the Darling Foundation to George Gordon of Newburgh, NY, working circa 1800-24. The only difference is that the mark in the Darling book also has a first name initial - G.GORDON in italicized lettering.
