1/4" decorative banding around top and bottom, engraved floral cartouche on front, partially matte finish, "ear" handle. Height 3-1/4". Diameter of mouth 3-1/4"; of base 2-7/8". Weight 4-1/4 troy ounces. The monogram is a script "Westbrook Van Tassel 1874". He was born Feb. 4, 1874, son of William H. and Elizabeth A. (Thomas) Van Tassel. Mark condition is excellent. Overall condition is very good (very minor dents, slightly out of round).

Measuring 4 3/4" in diameter, standing 2 1/2" high, and weighing a very substantial 9.9 T. oz., this bowl is item number A7815 made by Gorham according to the marks on the underside. Its purpose is uncertain, being much larger than a standard child's dish, one possibility. It could be a christening bowl. In any case, it was presented to "Harry M. Hanoverian, c1740-50 -- prominent deep front rib, long rattail extending 4/5 of the way down bowl back; block mono M V A on reverse; 7-3/4" in length. Heavy -- each spoon weighs nearly 2.5 T oz. Condition is excellent, with just the merest touch of tipwear.

Short front rib, 7-lobe shell drop, never engraved, 3-3/4" long. Only one is marked -- N (pellet) L, as shown. Condition of both is excellent. There were 2 Nathaniels in the Lang family of silversmiths. The first, 1736-64, was the son of Jeffrey; the second, 12757-1824, was the son of Jeffrey's brother, Richard. No doubt, these spoons were made by the second, c1770-80.

Virginia circa 1810, length 5 3/4 inches, monogrammed "T" (??) in period script with flourishes, weight 2.51 oz. Troy the lot, light wear and some minor dents in bowls but superb color and very good overall condition. Clarico's work would appear to be scarce.

Wendell's late 19th century "Ariel" features a cherubic-looking figure set against a dense, decorative background. It is highly reminiscent of Dominick & Haff's "Labors of Cupid," which it predates by five years, 1895 vs. 1900.

This example is a 6 1/4" long, heavy, 1.7 T. oz. sauce ladle. The 1 3/4" diameter, 5/8" deep, bowl has flanged shoulders and a scalloped and patterned outer border.

Made by Edward Lang, Salem, Mass., c1770, for Susanna Bernon (1716-1802), the daughter of a prominent Hugenot family. Her initials and name are inscribed on the backs of the handles (see pic). The spoons themselves are in excellent condition, with a deep front rib. Length is 5-5/8".

length 7 1/4 inches, weight 2.69 oz. Troy, monogrammed as shown in photo number three, retailed by Daniel Low, some very minor stains on bowl but excellent overall condition.

Don't get me wrong, we love a nice 1820's piece of S.O.W. ever so much, but you'll never see this amount of detail in a sheaf which some brawny silversmith made by whacking a swage with a big hammer.

A known but unnamed pattern by Durgin, this design is French Rococo in manner. It is highly detailed, featuring scrolls, acanthus leaves, florettes, and beading arranged asymmetrically on the handle. The pattern repeats with slight variation on the backside.

This example is a 9 1/4" long, 3.8 T. oz., asparagus server. The shoulders of the serving end follow after the overall design with an added floral swag with bow. The crossbars joining the five tines are leafy scrolls. The serving... Click for details
