Gorham Art Nouveau Figural Sterling Silver Child's Mug

This mug made by Gorham about 1900 combines two style features.

First, it falls within the Art Nouveau style popular during the period. This is expressed in the overall undulating form, and in the sinuous character of the detailing, for example the organic nature of the handle and the stem and leaf elements that are applied to the body. Second, it also incorporates four applied children's figures that are very much in the manner of Kate Greenaway whose work harkens to the Arts and Crafts... Click for details

Stamped "H&S" in two circles joined by a diamond for Syracuse, New York's Hotchkiss & Schreuder, this 8 3/4" long, 1.7 T. oz., berry spoon dates from the 1860's.

It is an especially fine representation of the design sensibilities and manufacturing skills of the period.

The stem is twisted while the scalloped edged handle end is flat with a slightly upturned tip. The surface of this has an engine turned background complimented with bright cutting and a wriggle work border on the... Click for details

Dating from 1885, Gorham's "Old Masters" scarcely has any parallels in the realm of American sterling silver flatware. Each piece in the line, with some duplication, features a different, renowned figure from the realm of the classical arts. The handles are cast and individually designed with all aspects of the shank complimentary of the bust of whatever figure surmounts the end of that handle.

The figure in the instance of this 7 3/4" long, exceptional weight 2.2 T. oz., master butter... Click for details

Gale & Mosely, New York circa 1830, double struck-- for the uninitiated, this means the pattern is both front and back, length just shy of 8 1/2 inches, some very slight tine wear on a few (we've pictured the worst one in enlargement number four) but superb overall condition, weight 30.74 Troy ounces (!!) or 2.79 each on average, no monogram.

One would be hard-pressed indeed to find a better set of dinner forks.
