Durgin "Louis XV" Sterling Silver Lettuce Fork
Silver: Sterling: Flatware

Old Friends
1908f   $ 55

Durgin "Louis XV" Sterling Silver Lettuce Fork
click for details
Issued in 1891, Durgin's "Louis XV" is a dense, rococo design that reflects quite a different, and arguably more engaging, interpretation of the motif from Whiting's much simpler pattern of the same name produced in the same year.

This example is a 7 7/8" long, relatively weighty 1.0 T. oz., lettuce fork. It originally had an overall gold finish, but much of that was polished away and now shows only partly on the han... Click for details

Gorham "Ionic" Coin Silver Large Serving Spoon

Marked "Patent 1867" on the backside of the handle, and stamped with a lion, anchor, G, "Ionic" is one of Gorham's earliest full line patterns. It was also issued just before Gorham went from coin silver to a sterling standard in 1868 and examples of it are rather uncommon.

This example is a large, 8 1/2" long, 2.3 T. oz., serving spoon. It has a large, round bowl with a rippled base and notched shoulders. It is fi... Click for details

Durgin "Scroll" Large Sterling Silver Sugar Tongs

Durgin "Scroll" Large Sterling Silver Sugar Tongs

Something of a uncommon pattern, and a more intricate design than the name would imply, Durgin's 1886 "Scroll" has a repousse surface that features leaves, florals, and the namesake scrolls.

This example is a generously sized, 5" long, .9 T. oz. pair of sugar tongs. There is a fancy script "MAT" monogram on the arch. The gold washed talon grips are very finely rendered with detailed articulation on the inside as wel... Click for details

J.K. Martyn Sterling Silver Miniature Chairs
Silver: Sterling: Smalls

Old Friends
1893f   $ 60 pair

J.K. Martyn Sterling Silver Miniature Chairs
click for details
These two, sterling silver chairs appear to be a matched arm and sides, or "his and hers" pair. They were made by "J.K. Martyn" of Hoxsie, RI, according to the marks on the underside. "Martyn" is identified as an "Artificer" as stamped on the underside (along with the word "Sterling"), which would suggest they produced novelty items like this. The date is unknown, although some inference may be drawn from the fact that Hoxsie is an older section of the City of Warwick, and the term artificer ... Click for details

Choice Whiting "Arabesque" Sterling Silver Berry Spoon

Examples of Whiting's "Arabesque" as pristine as this 9" long, 2.0 T. oz., berry spoon are rare indeed. The low relief, dense, decorative design that features a griffin as the main feature is readily subject to polishing wear. This piece retains all its original fine detailing including, and especially so, the delicate feathering on the griffin's breast and wings.

All other aspects of the piece are equally pure. Th... Click for details
