Durgin Twist Large Sterling Lettuce Fork
Silver: Sterling: Flatware
Old Friends
1061f $ 90 HOLD
While Twist and Twist variants were produced by many makers, examples of it originating from Durgin are scarce. This c. 1887 example is a 9" long, just over 1.0 T. oz. lettuce fork, and is actually a double twist, with the style changing midway on the handle. This is a large piece, and has an oversized tine area, 3 1/8" by 1 1/2". This is delicately formed, with a pierced heel and sinuous tines. The serving area retains traces of an original gold wash. Those qualities, combined with the sle... Click for details

Sterling Hand Holding Cards Bonbon or Nut Spoon
Silver: Sterling: Flatware
Old Friends
1060f $ 85 HOLD
Among the somewhat whimsical themes that were brought into the realm of silver design starting in the late 1800's was that of playing cards. Kings, queens, jacks or knaves, for example, became subjects of imposing pieces on their own. This 5 1/4" long, 1.0 T. oz., bonbon or nut spoon is in that vein. The end of the handle portrays a cast, fully articulated hand holding five visible cards, with additional cards stacked under the left hand one. Curiously the cards portray a royal flush, which ... Fessenden Tulip All Sterling Pierced Tomato Server
Silver: Sterling: Flatware
Old Friends
1056f $ 135
Fessenden's Tulip is an impressive entry in the field of Art Nouveau floral designs. Introduced in 1910, it was late in that style period, but fully retains the spirit of the movement. The design is high relief and undulating. It completely embodies the languorous quality of Art Nouveau, with the tulip blossom drifting listlessly to one side as if nudged by a summer's breeze. A secondary image appears on the backside of the handle and is as fully engaging as the front. This item is a 6 7/8"... Click for details

Original Solid Sterling Towle Canterbury Pea Spoon
Silver: Sterling: Flatware
Old Friends
1054f $ 195
Towle's 1890's Canterbury is a highly evolved scroll and bead design. The beading flanks the entire length of the handle, and is graduated, enlarged at the widest point, and quite fine at the narrowest. The triple scroll top is expressive, suggesting a breaking wave. The pattern shows to full advantage at the scale of this 8 3/4" long, 2.0 T. oz., pea or ice spoon. An original example of this form is a rarity. The bowl is pierced and has a scalloped rim that incorporates elements of the patte... Click for details
