New York City's Theodore Evans used a maker's mark he may have borrowed from William Gale for whom he worked. This same rectangle, circle, diamond was later adopted by Dominick & Haff, so there is something of a provenance to it. In Evans' case, he added the year of manufacture in the diamond, which in the instance of this 7 1/8" long, approximately 1.1 T. oz., "French Thread" dessert spoon, was 1858. "T.E.&Co." appears in the rectangle. This is a quality piece, with a balanced design, manuf... Click for details

"Prince Albert" is a design that is attributed to Michael Gibney, but which shows up in the marketplace under various nameplates (Gibney rarely marked his own work). Indeed this exceptionally long, 8 1/8", and heavy, 2.3 T. oz., fork is stamped "Ball, Tompkins & Black." A firm of high standing, successors to Marquand & Co. in 1839 before becoming "Ball, Black & Co." in 1851, it may have enjoyed a particularly close business connection with Gibney. The entry in Rainwater's "Encyclopedia of Ame... Click for details
