Extremely Rare Southern Spoon Martin Noxon, Edenton, NC
Silver: Coin Silver: Southern
Richards Antiques
$1,400
Fine early tablespoon by one of the rarest Southern makers, Martin Noxon of Edenton, North Carolina. It has a pointed handle and dates from about 1805. It is in excellent condition, measuring 8 7/16 inches and weighing 1.68 troy ounces. It also has a beautifully engraved, elegant script monogram on the handle. I have also noted that the hallmark is the only one I know which reads the same upside down. We have owned this spoon for almost a decade and have carefully followed sales of Noxon items, ... Gorham "Cottage" 1861 Ladle, San Francisco Retailer
Silver: Coin Silver: Serving Pieces
Old Friends
1367fb $ 435
J.W. Tucker was a noted and successful San Francisco retailer with dates from the 1850's to the 1880's. It is an ongoing matter of how much silver was made by the prominent California houses, and how much was simply retailed by those firms, but Tucker seems largely to have been a marketeer. This 12 1/2" long, heavy, 6.7 T. oz., large bowl soup ladle is an example of his enterprising ways in introducing sophisticated items to San Francisco, as it was made by East Coast manufacturer Gorham, of P... Gorham "Josephine" Coin Silver Oyster Ladle
Silver: Coin Silver: Serving Pieces
Old Friends
1338fe $ 225
This silver ladle, marked "Pure Coin," measures 11" long and weighs a hefty 4.5 T. oz. It is somewhat smaller than a full-size soup ladle and is likely an oyster ladle. The pattern is Gorham's leaf motif "Josephine." An early line pattern, Josephine was patented in 1855 and proved popular enough that it continued in production past the 1868 date when Gorham adopted the sterling standard. This is an outstanding example, with a perfectly-shaped bowl that is free of bends or dents, and having a... Click for details

Gorham "Imperial" Coin Silver Coffee Spoon
Silver: Coin Silver: Flatware
Old Friends
1335f $ 20 each, five available
Gorham's "Imperial" is a mid 19th century design that is rarely ever marked. This 4 11/16" long, relatively heavy .4 T. oz., coffee spoon, however, is stamped "Coin." Wood & Hughes had a counterpart design that seems always to have been marked "WwH." The patterns so closely parallel each other that they are nearly indistinguishable unless set alongside one another. The design has leafy elements that are reminiscent of "Olive," but overall "Imperial" is more complex. The shank of the handle ... Click for details
