Gorham Fiddle Thread Coin Tea or Dessert Fork

This Fiddle Thread fork measures 7" long and is quite heavy at 1.6 T. oz. It would have been used for tea or dessert. The backside is stamped Gorham & Co., which is a mark that was used by that company 1852-65, and "Coin." The front is engraved A.L. Fiske in script lettering. It is in very good condition, with surface scratches on the tines, which also show slight tip wear.

“Beaded” became a “standard pattern” – that is, there were many makers and versions from ca. 1850 through the coin period. Philadelphia's is distinguished by the inclusion of a fleur de lys at the top and bottom of the handle. This group bears the mark of Philadelphia retailer C. Bard & Son. There is wear to the pattern, more on the forks than the spoons (see enlargements; the first 2 pics are the forks, the next 3 the spoons). Downturned fiddle handles, c1840 -- pointed shoulders, drop on the bowl back, reverse tipt, feathered script mono C R on front; 6" long, 7 Troy oz. One spoon has been replaced by a sterling example made or sold by Simons Bro. & Co. Condition of all 12 is near mint.
The O'Daniel mark is a bit strange, with a period in place of an apostrophe between the O and the D. This same error is repeated in a different mark shown in Belden.
