This is a generously proportioned, 7 1/4" long, 2.1 T. oz., coin silver sugar sifter in a Prince Albert pattern. In this instance, the piece bears an early (mid 1800's) pseudo hallmark for Boston's Farrington and Hunnewell. It is also engraved "Haddock" in script on the reverse. It has an attractive, pierced scallop-shell bowl that is roughly 2 1/4" in diameter and 1/2" deep. It is in flawless condition and has a fine patina.

These seven spoons are all 7" long and weigh 6.7 T. oz. the lot. While they are a matching set, with all of them monogrammed with an Old English "B" on the reverses, there is some slight variance from piece to piece. They are all stamped "Coin" and "N.G. Wood," but five are in a script stamp and two in block lettering. While reminiscent of Olive, this pattern incorporates a cluster of grapes and a large grape leaf, lending it considerably more design interest than was common with most other mid 19th century silver styles. Scale tells all about this mid 19th century coin silver soup ladle. It is 13" long, with a bowl that is 4 1/2" x 3 1/2" x 1 1/4", and weighs 6.7 T. oz. The pattern is Prince Albert. It has a double provenance according to the marks, with both references for New York. One stamp on the reverse is D.M. Fitch, Troy. The second imprint is "W.H.D." flanked by 18 and 52, for the date. Two spoons made 20-25 years apart with 2 different marks, both cited in Darling's NY State Silversmiths.
1. 18thC, c1790 - pointed end, interesting double roulette drop, shaded block mono SM in cartouche on front; 9-1/8" long. Mark is J B (see pic).
2. Downturned fiddle handle, c1810-15 - no shoulders, long drop, ornate feathered script R C M on front; 9-1/2" long, extended bowl tip unworn. Mark is J. Bedford (see pic).
