Short wide scoop at one end, long narrow scoop at the other, connected by a threaded mid-piece (see pix); each scoop with a pointed arch drop, an unusual touch in marrow scoops; length is 10-1/8", condition of scoop and mark is excellent. American coin silver marrow scoops are relatively rare, of course, and southern scoops even more so.

Pointed-end handles, c1790 -- brightcutting and roulette work half way down handles, pointed drops, short reverse rib, feathered script mono F L in cartouche under numbers 3, 5 & 6; 5-3/8" in length. Condition is mint. Why were spoons numbered? Two possible reasons: 1) individual spoons were assigned to each person in the household, and 2) to identify the missing silver in case of theft. Interestingly, most, if not all, numbered spoons made by American smiths that we've seen came from Rhode I... Click for details

A good early Irish three-footed sugar bowl in extremely good condition. No damage or repairs, whatsoever. Good detail to the decoration without excessive wear. There is no date letter which is not that unusual with early Irish silver but the shapes of the Harp and Britannia marks date this piece at about 1740. These two marks are quite clear though the maker's mark needs some imagination, it is a J?, most probably John Moore, not only did he work around that time, but his mark has the intersecti... Marked three times on bottom. This J:B mark is attributed tentatively by Yale to J. Bard of PA. Winterthur attributes it to Joseph Barton of Stockbridge, MA and Utica, NY. Acquired from source that says it came from family that also had a Baltimore beaker. Also included in this lot: a pair of pointed end teaspoons with raised, pointed-arch drops (say 1800-1810), one teaspoon having the same J:B mark; the family source of these spoons had much silver from Baltimore and Philadelphia. The sauceboat... Click for details

Apart from being a pitcher I am not sure what it was used to serve, something hot obviously. It has insulators in the handles and an air-hole in the lid. Traditional Southern form with the squat baluster body and large spout. Fairly plain apart from the frieze on the foot, the gadrooned rim and two scroll and floral decorated cartouches, one of which bears a 3-letter monogram: a scrolling THL. Besides a couple of dings in the gadrooned rim it is in remarkable condition for its age, about 1850, w... Click for details

Long (3-1/4") downturned fiddle handles, early pointed shoulders, no mono (never engraved; no sign of mono removal); 9-3/8" in length. Condition is excellent, with the exception of very minor tipwear. Members of the Best family were among the earliest silversmiths in Cincinnati. In her book on Cincinnati silversmiths, Elizabeth D. Beckman points out that the firm of R. Best & Co. was in business for only 2 years - 1815-17. (One sold, 3 remain.)

Downturned fiddle handle, pointed shoulders, large drop, feathered script mono C W on front of handle; 8-7/8" in length; 1-3/4 T oz. This piece is in near-mint condition, the extended bowl tip unworn. The only question is the identity of the silversmith -- G (pellet) B. We bought the spoon in PA. Possible makers from that state include George Baldwin of Chester; George Bardeck of Philly; George Beatty, Harrisburg. The most likely maker, we think, is George Bertie, who moved from Baltimore an... Click for details
