2 Lancaster teaspoons by John Ewing & Wm. Haverstick
Silver: Coin Silver: Flatware: 18th Century
North Hill Antiques
151 Both $300
Both examples are remarkably similar -- 0val-end handles, c1790 -- shell drops on bowl backs (see pic), reverse ribs, and both with the same mono, block D over W * H. The difference in the shell drops is quite clear; the difference in the monos is very slight. Both spoons are just short of 4-1/2" in length. The Ewing mark is less well known, but is confirmed here with the addition of the Haverstick mark. (See p. 14 in Gerstell for description and pic of Ewing's IE mark.) The Haverstick spoo... Silver: Coin Silver: Flatware: 18th Century
North Hill Antiques

New England picturebacks are extremely rare -- none moreso than Rhode Island birds. Only Burr is known to have produced birdback spoons. The bird on this piece is in bold relief, all of its parts intact. The spoon itself has a pointed-end handle with a clearly defined reverse rib. The mono is C * H in shaded block letters, and the length is 5-1/4". The mark is E (pellet) BURR. The bowl tip has a bit of wear, otherwise the overall condition is excellent.

Coin Silver Tablespoon Marked "A.P"
Silver: Coin Silver: Flatware: Coffin-End
Old Friends
587b $ 60
The "A.P" mark on this 8 5/8" long, 1.7 T. oz., coin silver tablespoon is not yielding to identification. That is frustrating, in that it is a coffin end style with some individuality. The shoulder area is chamfered on the front, resulting in a diamond-shaped design. The feathered "MW" monogram is surmounted by a block "A" suggesting this might have been part of a set. Early spoons are often found with numbers, indicating they were assigned to an individual. One possibility for the maker is... Click for details

John Walraven Late 18th C. Coin Coffee Spoon
Silver: Coin Silver: Flatware
Old Friends
581b $ 28
There are several late 18th century possibilities listed in Ensko for the initials J.W., only one of which has periods following the letters. That is for Baltimore's John Walraven, with a date of 1792 given. The mark on this has a serrated surround, though, whereas the one in Ensko does not. The style fits the presumed date. The piece is 5 1/4" long overall, and light, 11 grams (.3 T. oz.) It has a reverse tipt end, with faceted sides leading to the point of the tip. There is a line drop o... Click for details

Very Old, 11/12 Mark, Kirk King Teaspoon
Silver: Coin Silver: Flatware: Early Patterns
Old Friends
568b $ 40 multiples available
Kirk's King dates from the first quarter of the 19th century, and remained in production under the Kirk name for a century and a half, and then longer under Stieff's ownership, so there are ample examples of the pattern in circulation. This 5 3/4" long teaspoon, however, dates from deep in the history of Kirk, and examples from this period are not so common. Stamped "S.K 11/12," the later being one of Baltimore's individual assay marks, this ranges from as early as 1830. It has a hefty feel i... Click for details

Old Friends
567b $ 60 HOLD
This 8 5/8" long, moderate weight, 1.4 T. oz., example of the basket of flowers motif is by J.L. Moore of NYC and Brooklyn. This design is much more likely to show up on teaspoons than it is on tablespoons, so that lends this piece a bit of distinction. It has a shell back on the bowl and a feathered script "WHC" (?) monogram. The overall condition is very good. The basket of flowers shows some polishing wear, but remains distinct. The bowl has a slight bit of flattening at the tip, but it ... Click for details
