Connecticut BIRDBACK tsp -- Robert Fairchild, Durham
Silver: Coin Silver: Flatware: 18th Century
North Hill Antiques
108S $350
Featheredged oval-end handle, c1780 -- reverse tipt, shaded block mono M P on front; 4-7/8" in length. New England birdbacks are rarely seen, CT even rarer, Fairchild being the only CT maker with his mark on a birdie that we've seen. Condition of the spoon is excellent. One wishes that Master Fairchild had exercised a bit more exuberance when striking the bird, but, as they say, it is what it is, which ain't bad.

L. Ladomus (Phila.) "Leaf" Coin Silver Tea Fork
Silver: Coin Silver: Flatware: Early Patterns
Old Friends
1411fb $ 45
This 7" long, 1.3+ T. oz., tea or dessert fork is stamped "Patent 1850" and with the name "L. [Lewis] Ladomus." This is a very early patent date for a die struck pattern, and with a nod to an informed source on the matter, the design has been identified as belonging to James Watts. Watts and Ladomus were both located in Philadelphia. The design is an elaborated leaf pattern, offered in a period style. There is a fancy, feathered script "HLR" monogram. The condition is very good. The tines ... Click for details

Gorham "Imperial" Coin Silver Coffee Spoon
Silver: Coin Silver: Flatware
Old Friends
1335f $ 20 each, five available
Gorham's "Imperial" is a mid 19th century design that is rarely ever marked. This 4 11/16" long, relatively heavy .4 T. oz., coffee spoon, however, is stamped "Coin." Wood & Hughes had a counterpart design that seems always to have been marked "WwH." The patterns so closely parallel each other that they are nearly indistinguishable unless set alongside one another. The design has leafy elements that are reminiscent of "Olive," but overall "Imperial" is more complex. The shank of the handle ... Click for details
