This 5 1/4" long, coin silver coffee spoon is marked IP, for late 18th century, New York silversmith John Pearson. It is a pointed antique design, with a slight reverse tipt end, and an exposed drop on the bowl. The front is monogrammed "PIM" in a manner consistent with the period of the piece. The condition is very good. The bowl is well-shaped, but with a slight bit of tip wear, and equally slight dimpling on the inside. Thomas Stephens Eayers -- Flynt & Fales, in their tome on Deerfield silver, offer a fascinating glimpse of Eayers and his relationship with The Patriot. Eayers worked in Worcester and Boston. His initial mark is T (pellet) E, as shown in the Deerfield book and in photo #3. This piece has an oval handle end, a wide incised pointed arch drop, with brightcutting and roulette work as shown in photo 2. The mono is M C in block letters. Length is 5-1/8". Condition is good, no tears, no repairs.

In their Heritage Foundation work on New England silversmiths, Flynt & Fales describe Portsmouth, New Hampshire's Samuel Drowne as an "important workman, [who] made beautiful silver." This 5 3/4", coin silver spoon attests to that assessment. It is finely crafted in high style. The bowl is elegant, narrow and pointed, with a broadened tip. Bright cut. Length 9-1/8". Weight just under 2 troy ounces each. The monogram is a script JEI, attributed to Jared & Elizabeth (Pettit)Ingersoll; he was in the Continental Congress and a delegate to the Constitutional Convention in 1787. Overall condition is excellent (1 bowl slightly bent). Mark condition is excellent (7 are D.V.V and 4 DV,all in rectangles and with his usual eagle and shield marks in diamond cartouches.

This pair of coin silver tongs are 6 5/8" long, 1 3/4" wide at the arch, and 7/8" across at the top. They weigh a substantial 2.2 T. oz. The makers stamp is "Motts," for W. and J. Mott of New York, who Ensko dates as 1789. He notes they "issued the first trademan's tokens in the United States." This pair have sculpted arms, and cupped, shell-shaped grips. William Jones died in 1730, so this spoon has to be among the earliest Hanoverians made in the Colonies. It has a prominent front rib and a long tapering rattail (see pic). It is marked W barred I on both the handle and in the bowl (see pix of both marks). The mono is a shaded block B over W S on reverse. A rare and early example of Exeter silver - Pentecost Symonds, Exeter, ca. 1720. Hanoverian handle, rattail-back bowl. Measures a little over 13".
