Set of 3 numbered tsps by John Gibbs, Providence
Silver: Coin Silver: Flatware: 18th Century
North Hill Antiques
120 Ea. $150
Pointed-end handles, c1790 -- brightcutting and roulette work half way down handles, pointed drops, short reverse rib, feathered script mono F L in cartouche under numbers 3, 5 & 6; 5-3/8" in length. Condition is mint. Why were spoons numbered? Two possible reasons: 1) individual spoons were assigned to each person in the household, and 2) to identify the missing silver in case of theft. Interestingly, most, if not all, numbered spoons made by American smiths that we've seen came from Rhode I... Click for details

Early Irish Fish Server, Dublin 1764.
Silver: Coin Silver: Flatware: 18th Century
Albion Antiques Ltd
KG2M76 SOLD
This is a magnificent and very rare fish server. The triangular blade is pierced with scrolls and floral motifs. The long robust handle bears a crest of a boar on a coronet. Fully and clearly hallmarked on the underside for Dublin 1764 and a maker's mark of ID in an oval.
This form did, however, have its problems due to age and over-piercing. Splits did occur across the narrow strips of metal. This slice has two small splits about 0.125" long and two old repaired splits about the same size. Th... Click for details

George II sterling marrow scoop, London 1739
Silver: Coin Silver: Flatware: 18th Century
Albion Antiques Ltd
KG2M98 $ 495
Quite an early, robust marrow scoop with crisp clear hallmarks, for London 1739, maker John Jacob. The earlier scoops did tend to be heavier but, due to age, did suffer from rubbed, illegible hallmarks. That is what is so exciting, if one could find marrow scoops exciting, about this example. It has all the features you desire: good age, good gauge, good marks. Dimensions: 8.75" long. 2 Troy.oz.

North Hill Antiques
114 $150
Pointed-end handle brightcut its entire length, slashed drop, feathered script mono E R in cartouche on front; 5-7/16" long. Lamson present a bit of a mystery, although he's listed in various books -- Belden, Flynt & Fales, "Maryland Silver," etc. Thorn gives a pretty good representation of his initial mark, which is picked up by Kovel, and is shown in one of the pix associated with this piece. Lamson seems to have begun his working life in Boston, c1790, and by 1817 produced 55 oz of silver ob... Click for details

There is no Date Letter which is quite acceptable for smaller 18th century articles, though this piece can be dated to 1784/85 by the shape of the Sovereign's Head. This shape was in use between December 1784 and May 1785.
The Sovereign's Head, in its var... Click for details
