Oval-end handles, c1795 -- brightcutting and roulette work entire length of handle, block mono in I C in cartouche on front; 9" in length. Birds are a tad worn but spoons are in great shape, brightcutting still crisp, marks (M&R) as clear as the day they were struck.

An extraordinary set of six coin silver teaspoons by Samuel Richards, who worked in Philadelphia from 1793 to 1818. These spoons are in virtually mint condition, the bowls still pointed and the top edge flat. They have nicely engraved block monograms (L T) and pointed arch, raised drops. The marks match "a" on page 354 of Marks of American Silversmiths in the Ineson-Bissell Collection (at Winterthur) by Louise Conway Belden. Salem circa 1790, bright cut border with round downturned end and vestigial back midrib, rounded drop and foliate scroll decoration, length 5 1/2 inches. Aside from one minor pinprick in the bowl, condition is exemplary. Northey was better known in his day as a merchant, and did not produce much silverware.

Deep front rib on handle front, thin rattail extending half-way down center of bowl back; block mono S B on reverse together with owner's mono in script: Susanna Bernon. The spoon is 4-5/8" in length. It is in excellent condition. Susanna Bernon was born in 1716 in Narragansett, RI, the daughter of a prominent Hugenot family. She died in 1802.
