John J. Stowell (Boston) Sheaf of Wheat Coin Teaspoon
Silver: Coin Silver: Flatware: Early Patterns
Old Friends
631b $ 50 HOLD
John J. Stowell, whose mark appears on this 5 3/4" long Sheaf of Wheat coin teaspoon was born in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1793, and was known to be working as a clockmaker and jeweler in Boston 1823-25, the likely period of this piece. He died in 1834. A piece in this design by him has to be a rarity. It is a quality item with some modest wear. There is a feathered script "NSB" (?) monogram that is slightly softened from polishing, as is the sheaf of wheat itself. The bowl is well shaped... Click for details

Lows, Ball (Boston) 6 Massive Fiddle Tipt Dinner Forks
Silver: Coin Silver: Flatware: Early Patterns
Old Friends
626b $ 325 set
These six, matching coin silver forks are very large, reminiscent actually of a European scale, and therefore an unusual find in early American, c. 1840, coin silver. Each of them measures 8 1/8" long, while the set weighs a hefty 12.4 T. oz. The pattern is a fiddle tipt, with especially broad ends. The reverses are all monogrammed in a triple letter script that is difficult to decipher. The retailer (and likely maker) was Lows, Ball & Company, one of the predecessor partnerships that evolve... Very Old, 11/12 Mark, Kirk King Teaspoon
Silver: Coin Silver: Flatware: Early Patterns
Old Friends
568b $ 40 multiples available
Kirk's King dates from the first quarter of the 19th century, and remained in production under the Kirk name for a century and a half, and then longer under Stieff's ownership, so there are ample examples of the pattern in circulation. This 5 3/4" long teaspoon, however, dates from deep in the history of Kirk, and examples from this period are not so common. Stamped "S.K 11/12," the later being one of Baltimore's individual assay marks, this ranges from as early as 1830. It has a hefty feel i... Click for details

J L Moore (NY) Coin Basket of Flowers Tablespoon
Silver: Coin Silver: Flatware: Early Patterns
Old Friends
567b $ 60 HOLD
This 8 5/8" long, moderate weight, 1.4 T. oz., example of the basket of flowers motif is by J.L. Moore of NYC and Brooklyn. This design is much more likely to show up on teaspoons than it is on tablespoons, so that lends this piece a bit of distinction. It has a shell back on the bowl and a feathered script "WHC" (?) monogram. The overall condition is very good. The basket of flowers shows some polishing wear, but remains distinct. The bowl has a slight bit of flattening at the tip, but it ... Click for details
