Coin silver teaspoon by Albert Coles of NYC, ca. 1870-78m marked with his "Pigtail man" mark. The pattern looks very much like "Josephine" by Gorham, which was patented in 1855. Wear on the drop and denting in the bowl. No engraving.

Coin silver sugar shell in a pattern that might be called "Grape" because of the 2 bunches of grapes and a grape leaf at the end of the handle in the cartouche. Quite likely an unidentified pattern by John Pohlamus of NYC. Engraved on the reverse "LKB" in script. Marked "A. SANBORN" incuse for Amose Sanborn of Lowell, Mass. ca. 1850. Also marked "PATENT.1850". Excellent condition. Slight wear on the drop and some of the design slightly rubbed.

However, since the fork is coin and is not marked sterling, I expect that it was made before 1871, possibly by William Gale, and marketed by Wood & Hughes in NYC later. Engraved "J. I. A very heavy early sterling silver tablespoon in excellent condition in a varian of the "Tuscan" pattern, 8 and 1/4 inches long ca. 1868. An interesting piece because it was given as a "memento mori," i.e. a memento of a person's death. Engraved "Adam Sherman" in script on the front and "April 2nd 1868" "Aged 87 Y 1 M 18 Days" on thee reverse in script. Marked "J.T.FOX" and "925" incuse. Possibly John T. Fox of Rochester, but Kovel's gives an earlier date for him.

Each of these 12 circa 1850 matched dinner forks is 7 3/4" long. The groups weigh a hefty 19.3 T. oz. They are stamped "Coin" and "H.L. Webster & Co." for the Providence, Rhode Island firm of that name. Webster was in partnership with Gorham for a short period prior to 1850. The pattern on these is a leaf and cable design that is identified with Webster. They have a feathered script "LAR" monogram. The condition is very good. There is no visible polishing wear. Gorham's Josepine can be identified from its "Pat. '55" mark, which this has. It is also stamped "Coin" and "S." This example is a 5 7/8" long, shell bowl sugar spoon. The dominant element of the design is an acanthus leaf surrounded by two scrolls surmounted by a small fan. This motif is expanded upon on the outside heel of the bowl. The condition is mint. The form is flawless and the finish is finely patinated.

This boxed fish serving knife and fork remian in their original presentation box. Each piece is doubly stamped "Wm. Gale & Son," and an oval/diamond/triangle marked G&S and 1852. The handle are hollow, in the Jenny Lind pattern, and the serving ends are solid. The scale on these is massive. The slice is 13 5/8" long, and the fork is 10 1/2" long.
