Downturned fiddle handle, c1840 - pointed shoulders, script mono FR on front; 5-3/8" long. Mark, in serrated rectangle as shown in Cutten, is lightly struck but all letters are there and readable. Bowl has a few shallow teething marks, but otherwise spoon is fine.

Coin silver serving spoon by John Adam of Alexandria, Virginia, ca. 1801-1846. Fiddle handle is ribbed on reverse. Engraved "GSH" in copperplate script. Marked "I [bullet] ADAM." in rectangle. Broad drop. Handle appears to have been slightly bent where fiddle meets stem, but you have to look closely to see this minor defect. Only the slightest bowl wear on the left. In very good condition.

John Schuyler Walter was born in Freehold, NJ, worked in Matawan, NJ, and NYC, and then skedaddled to Butler County, OH, which borders Indiana, just north of Cincinnati. These tongs were made about 1830, which puts them in Walter's NJ-NY period. The tongs are 6-1/4" long and quite heavy. They have scalloped fiddle arms and oval nips. The feathered script mono on the bend seems to be ETHC. Condition is excellent throughout.

It seems that Baird did not work in North Carolina, as suggested by Cutten; he has been re-situated in Ohio by John McGrew in "Manufacturers' Marks on American Coin Silver."

The form of these suggests that they were made about 1820 - which means they could have been made in Philadelphia or New Orleans. It's anyone's guess, and the price is right for either venue. Description as follows: downturned fiddle handles, square shoulders, prominent drop, feathered script mono T+CM (?) on front; 5-1/2" in length, good weight. Condition is very good, just the slightest touch of tipwear.

6 coin silver teaspoons by D. Hotchkiss, who worked in Palmyra, NY c. 1840 and Syracuse, NY c. 1847-49. He later became a partner in Hotchkiss & Schreuder, which firm lasted into the late 18th Century. Fiddle handle, engraved on the front "MB" in scirpt. Hallmark "D. HOTCHKISS." in rectangle on reverse of stem. Bowls in very good condition with slight turning in at the points detectable with a fingernail run across them. On bowl has two small dings. But all in all a very nice set.

5 coin silver teaspoons sold by Lowell & Senter, watchmakers and jewelers of Portland, Maine. The firm existed from about 1830 to 1870. These appear to be from the 1840-1850 period. Double-swell fiddle handle (Scotch fiddle). Engraved "SRH" on the front of the handle. Bowls in very good condition although the very ends are begninning to turn adn their are very small dings in some of them. Hallmarked "LOWELL & SENTER" in a rectangle.
