Gorham Medallion Fried Oyster Server
Silver: Coin Silver: Serving Pieces
Old Friends
514b $ 295
This serving piece is generally identified as a fried oyster server. It could be a fried egg server as well. The form also shows up in ice cream sets (see Old Friends item 519b), so the argument is equally strong that it is an ice cream spade. In any case, it is an appealing piece of Gorham's Medallion. This example is 9 5/8" long, and solid weight at 2.6 T. oz. It has an ovoid, essentially flat serving end with a cupped heel and flanged edges. Inspired by classical figures, this item feat... N. Harding (Boston) Applied Medallion Coin Berry Spoon
Silver: Coin Silver: Serving Pieces
Old Friends
407b $ 185
In his 1988 foundational work "Silver Medallion Flatware," D. Albert Soeffing describes this medallion made by Boston's Newell Harding as "one of the 'naive' types," and he adds, "as such, [it] bears its own charm." This particular piece belies a naive label in either design or manufacturing sophistication, especially given its early 1860's date. It is an 8 3/4" long, 1.9 T. oz., berry spoon, and exhibits considerable intricacy of execution. It has a twist stem, deep coffered bowl with scallo... Click for details
