This 9" long, 1.9 T. oz., c. 1855 coin silver berry spoon was made by Farrington & Hunnewell of Boston. It has a plum-shaped bowl that is characteristic of the maker, area and period, and intricate bright, diamond cutting which was brought to a fine art in mid 19th century Boston. There is an interesting inscription that reads "W.&D. To," in cursive on the reverse and "E.C." in elaborate Old English lettering on the front. The condition is mint; the finish is lustrous. Born in 1799, Benjamin Pitman worked in New Bedford, Massachusetts during its peak as a whaling city. Tastes would have been aspirational toward the sophistication of the larger urban centers of the time. This 6 3/4" long, .8+ T. oz., c. 1835 large sugar or preserve spoon mirrors the style of the period. It has a tipt end, narrow shank, and stylized shell bowl with a flat heel. This coin silver sugar spoon is stamped "Geo. Jack," who was undoubtedly the retailer. The design is characteristic of William Faber of Philadelphia. It has a shaped end with intricate engraving and a feathered script "MMP" monogram. The backside is plain. It measures 6 3/8" long and weighs a rather light .6 T. oz. The bowl is scallop shell form. It is in excellent condition, with crisp engraving and a fine finish.

This coin silver punch ladle is truly that form, having two pouring spouts on either side of its 4 1/2" x 2 3/4" x 1 1/8" deep bowl. It is an early example for an American punch ladle, dating to the mid 19th century, as evidenced by the design, and by the retailer's mark, J.&W. Moir. This 8 1/2" long, 1.2 T. oz., coin silver berry spoon is stamped Gorham & Co., a date mark Carpenter states was in use 1852-65. This was a time when that company had not yet made its full mark, although even early on quality was evident in its production as evidenced by this. Scroll themes were popular design motifs for mid 19th century silver, and particularly so in the Boston area. This 6 13/16" long, rather heavy 1.3 T. oz., preserve shell retailed by Roxbury's (a section of Boston) S.G. Brooks is a case in point. Possibly produced by Boston's Farrington & Hunnewell who favored this look, the handle has a lined border, scroll and leaf top, a leaf detail midway on the edges and another leaf and scroll element at the join with the shell-shaped, gold washed bowl. ... This 9" long, 2.0 T. oz., coin silver berry spoon is an exceptionally fine example of mid 19th century Boston silver. It was made by Farrington & Hunnewell and retailed by C.A.W. Fiddle arms with pointed shoulders and spoon nips, c1820-30 -- feathered script mono J L C in roulette cartouche on bend; 5-5/8" long. Mark is struck on both arms. This M&C mark is attributed to Meredith & Campbell in the new tome by Catherine B. Hollan, Virginia Silversmiths." A similar mark is attributed to McCay & Cowan of Richmond; the style of these tongs suggests the later period while the Winchester partnership was active.

This coin silver berry spoon measures 8 3/4" long and, although light in the hand, weighs 1.8 T. oz. The pattern is "Strawberry," which is an early design by Durgin. Examples of it show up in both coin and sterling silver, and with and without a Durgin identifier. This bears only the name of the retailer, Boston's Crosby, Morse & Foss, and the words "Patent" and "Pure Coin." The bowl form is one that Durgin employed.
