Heavy coin silver sugar shell in a beautiful pattern I have not been able to identify by Newell Harding Co., Boston, c. 1851-1870. 6 3/4 inches long, modified shell bowl. Engraved "Sarah" in script on the reverse. Marks COIN and N HARDING CO. incuse. A good, heavy piece. Like new. While this is probably a sugar shell it just as easily could be used (and may have been used) as a preserve spoon since its shape is somewhat like later preserve spoons.

Early 19th Century coin silver gravy/sauce ladle by Frank Richmond, Providence, Rhode Island, c. 1815-20. Fiddle handle, 6 inches long. Shell on reverse of bowl. Engraved "LW" in copperplate script on the front. Mark F.RICHMOND in Roman in rectangle on reverse.No apprecaible wear. No dings. Enlargement 5 appears as though the bowl has been repaired by solder, but this is an optical illusion. The line is actually part of the shell decoration.

Magnificant pair of coin silver gravy/sauce ladles manufactured in Philadelphia by Taylor & Lawrie c. 1837-1846 and sold by Bailey & Kitchen c. 1837-1846. 7 1/2 inches long. Very heavy stock. They feel like English pieces rather than American. Marked with Taylor & Lawrie's [Eagle][Thistle][Lyre] and BAILEY & KITCHEN in rectangle. Engraved MKT in Gothic on the front and "M.R.P. 1910" in Roman on the reverse. Condition is pristine.

Beautiful preserve spoon in the Medallion pattern by Hotchkiss & Schreuder, Syracuse, NY. CA 1870. They first produced this Medallion pattern in about 1867. This piece is marked "STERLING" so is probably after 1870. In excellent condition with significant gilding remaining on the bowl. The medallion of the young Dionysus is sharp. Marked H & S, STERLING, and M & D ROSENBERG for the unknown retailer. No engraving. 6 and 11/16 inches long.

A pair of American Coin Silver Fiddle Tipt Double Swell (Scotch Fiddle) Tablespoons or Serving Spoons 8 and 7/8 inches long by Lowell & Senter of Portland, Maine. Lowell & Senter were watchmakers and jewelers from 1837 to 1869. Excellent condition except for tips of bowls which are slightly worn on the left side, indicating significant use, probably as serving spoons. Mono "R" in script on reverse. Marked "Lowell & Senter" in large and small Roman letters in a rectangle.

Incuse marks of W Gale & Son, 925 Sterling, and Patented 1860. Incuse mark "1" on reverse of shoulder. Monogramed with gothic "G." Perfect except for some minor scuffing on the left side of the bowl on the outside (see photo).

Coin silver crumber by Samuel T. Crosby of Boston, Mass. c. 1849-50 in the Fiddle Thread pattern. Engraved "ARM" in Old English on the handle. Baroque etching on the blade with no monogram in the cartouche. Excellent condition with one questionable ding toward the end of the blade that does not show on the back and is barely discernable.

This is a generously proportioned, 7 1/4" long, 2.1 T. oz., coin silver sugar sifter in a Prince Albert pattern. In this instance, the piece bears an early (mid 1800's) pseudo hallmark for Boston's Farrington and Hunnewell. It is also engraved "Haddock" in script on the reverse. It has an attractive, pierced scallop-shell bowl that is roughly 2 1/4" in diameter and 1/2" deep. It is in flawless condition and has a fine patina.

Scale tells all about this mid 19th century coin silver soup ladle. It is 13" long, with a bowl that is 4 1/2" x 3 1/2" x 1 1/4", and weighs 6.7 T. oz. The pattern is Prince Albert. It has a double provenance according to the marks, with both references for New York. One stamp on the reverse is D.M. Fitch, Troy. The second imprint is "W.H.D." flanked by 18 and 52, for the date. Two spoons made 20-25 years apart with 2 different marks, both cited in Darling's NY State Silversmiths.
1. 18thC, c1790 - pointed end, interesting double roulette drop, shaded block mono SM in cartouche on front; 9-1/8" long. Mark is J B (see pic).
2. Downturned fiddle handle, c1810-15 - no shoulders, long drop, ornate feathered script R C M on front; 9-1/2" long, extended bowl tip unworn. Mark is J. Bedford (see pic).

At 10 1/8" long and nearly 3 T. oz., this mid 19th century serving item is massive by any measure. It is marked Warner and Coin on the reverse. The name Warner is most associated with Baltimore, but this may have a Philadelphia origin. Certainly the design suggests this, as the shape of the handle is quite similar to Faber items.
