The age old question, NYC or Savannah. In my humble opinion there is no way to tell on this piece unless you know the monogramee. It is marked "FM" (although the picture looks like "PM") with no makers marks. It is single struck Kings pattern which was popular during Marquands Savannah period. The condition is good and it is 5". I'm going to let you decide where it was sold. Ca 1825.

A large plain soup ladle with an oval bowl and fiddle terminus. Stedman was very active in business as well as politics in 19c Raleigh, until his accidental death in 1833. His silversmithing career began in 1822 when he opened an establishment in Raleigh, which must have met with some success as he appeared to have taken on at least three apprentices. 13.5" long, 4.5' bowl

Here is an extremely rare item in fabulous condition. Standing 11" high and weighing 24 troy oz, it bears a contemporary monogram which appears to be WLS or WSL. James Spear was an active silversmith, as opposed to a mere retailer, in Charleston from 1846 to 1871, but formed a short-lived partnership with J.C.Wood , under the name of J.E.Spear & Co. This partnership lasted just the one year, 1849

The single struck Kings forks are a little over 7" long. The pattern is crisp and the shell on the back excellent. The tines leave a little to be desired. There are a couple of bends but they are even and do not seem to be clipped. They are marked "F.M." and hallmarks. There is a n excellent monogram of possibly a hairy paw coming out of water with a flower in hand. Why you ask are there two spoons in this picture? They were in a group of silver items I received with the forks and have th... Click for details

This Fiddlethread serving spoon is 8". It's in nice condition with no bowl wear and one small dent. It was made by Wood & Hughes and retailed by Maurice Scooler of New Orleans. My guess is that it was made around 1870/80. It is marked "W&H", "Sterling" and "M. Scooler".

This is a small early teaspoon in decent condition. It's lack of shoulders and handle form indicate early 19th century, 1800/1810. It has some minor dings in the bowl, but no bowl wear. It has a miniscule crack (less than 1/64") where the bowl & handle meet. It is marked S. Baker, NY and Wilmington, NC. The book " Silversmiths of North Carolina" states that it is unknown when Baker came to Wilmington. These early, possibly Southern spoons are hard to find.

A very nice pair of heavy, 7 3/8" dessert spoons. They have no bowl wear and a couple of miniscule dents in one bowl. Stephen Baker was in Wilmington until around 1818 we think. We do not know when his son came into the business or actually when he was in New York. "New York State Silversmiths" has him dated there 1787/1856. All this is assuming these are the same Stephen Baker. These are marked S. Baker & Son.
