Gorham Kings I Sterling Silver Sugar Spoon
Silver: Sterling: Flatware
Old Friends
892a $ 48
Kings I was, as the name implies, the first of a series of Kings and Queens designs that Gorham produced. It is perhaps the simplest of the lineage, and the most idiomatically American, i.e. more adaptive than straight forwardly imitative. This sterling sugar spoon is 6 1/8" long and solid weight. The bowl form is a intricate, with a textured and engraved base that has a matte finish. It is monogrammed "Laura" on the front, and marked with the Gorham lion, anchor, G, Pat. 76, and Sterling on... Click for details

Unusual, Large Wood & Hughes Byzantine Serving Spoon
Silver: Sterling: Flatware
Old Friends
891a $ 265
This 9 1/4" long, 2.5 T. oz., sterling silver serving spoon is an unusual form. It has an over-sized, 4" x 2 1/8 x 3/4" deep, ovoid bowl, with an upraised and pointed end. These proportions result in a large volume capacity for the bowl, easily the equal or more of a typical platter spoon. Just what this piece's function was is uncertain, perhaps pudding, the afore-mentioned platter, or even salad serving spoon. Whatever its use, it is a commanding piece rendered in Wood & Hughes' mid 1870's... Click for details

Tiffany Lap-Over-Edge Heavy Sterling Tablespoon
Silver: Sterling: Flatware
Old Friends
889a $ 185
Tiffany's Lap-Over-Edge is a highly innovative design from the 1880's. This 8 1/2" long, massive 2.8 T. oz., sterling silver tablespoon is the plain version of the pattern. It does have, by way of decoration, a fancy "P" monogram rendered in an art nouveau style that is idiomatic to Tiffany in the late 19th/early 20th centuries. Marks on the reverse are Tiffany & Co., Sterling, Pat. 1880, and M. The condition is mint.

Gorham Medallion Gravy Ladle with Helmut Bowl
Silver: Coin Silver: Serving Pieces
Old Friends
887a $ 325 (second matching one available)
This Medallion gravy ladle made by Gorham bears a lion, anchor, G mark, along with the words Pat. 1864 and "Gorham & Co." In the absence of a standard designation, it is presumably coin silver. This makes it unusual, and definitely early, in that this pattern was generally produced in sterling (Tiffany & Co. were a major outlet for Gorham's Medallion, and sterling was Tiffany's standard, so Gorham followed that practice with this design even prior to shifting all output to sterling in 1868). ... Durgin "Spray" Sterling Silver Place Spoon
Silver: Sterling: Flatware
Old Friends
877a $ 40
At 7 1/8" long, and quite heavy, this is a large oval soup or dessert spoon. At the time of its circa 1870 manufacture, it would simply have served as a place piece. The pattern is identified as "Spray" by Hagen in her work on patterns. However, she misattributes the maker and date, so whether the name is correct is in question. Examples of this show up in coin and sterling, which this is, and sometimes it is marked and sometimes not by the maker. This happens to be stamped Wm. B. Durgin, w... Click for details

This circa 1870 sterling silver, 6 3/4" long preserve or jelly spoon was made by John Westervelt, who was a significant mid to late 19th century manufacturer located in Newburgh, New York. Gorham Art Nouveau "Patrician" Sterling Spoon
Silver: Sterling: Flatware
Old Friends
865a $ 48
Gorham's early 20th century Patrician appears quite similar to Gorham's Poppy. Patrician is the less commonly found of the two patterns, and judging by the weight and subtlety of detail, perhaps more up market. This item is 5 7/8" long, and heavy. It is shaped like an ice cream spoon, but seems large for that, so it may be a sugar. In either case, it is handsome and in superb condition. There is no monogram or monogram removal. The bowl is free of dings or burrs, and is finished in a gold ... Click for details
