Fessenden Tulip All Sterling Pierced Tomato Server
Silver: Sterling: Flatware
Old Friends
1056f $ 135
Fessenden's Tulip is an impressive entry in the field of Art Nouveau floral designs. Introduced in 1910, it was late in that style period, but fully retains the spirit of the movement. The design is high relief and undulating. It completely embodies the languorous quality of Art Nouveau, with the tulip blossom drifting listlessly to one side as if nudged by a summer's breeze. A secondary image appears on the backside of the handle and is as fully engaging as the front. This item is a 6 7/8"... Click for details

Original Solid Sterling Towle Canterbury Pea Spoon
Silver: Sterling: Flatware
Old Friends
1054f $ 195
Towle's 1890's Canterbury is a highly evolved scroll and bead design. The beading flanks the entire length of the handle, and is graduated, enlarged at the widest point, and quite fine at the narrowest. The triple scroll top is expressive, suggesting a breaking wave. The pattern shows to full advantage at the scale of this 8 3/4" long, 2.0 T. oz., pea or ice spoon. An original example of this form is a rarity. The bowl is pierced and has a scalloped rim that incorporates elements of the patte... Click for details

Tilden-Thurber Arts & Crafts Sterling Console Bowl
Silver: Sterling: Hollowware
Old Friends
1053f $ 675
This item is an important piece, but lacks a maker's identification. It was retailed by a premier jeweler, Tilden-Thurber of Providence, Rhode Island, a company whose fortunes were closely tied to Gorham both by informal joint enterprise and through marriage. A three-footed fruit or compote bowl, it measures 8 1/4" across, stands 2 1/2" high, and weighs 13.9 T. oz. It is clearly hand-crafted and through and through an arts and crafts piece dating from the first decades of the 20th century. T... Click for details

Lunt Chippendale Sterling Jelly Server
Silver: Sterling: Flatware

Whiting Heraldic All Sterling Large Fruit Knife
Silver: Sterling: Flatware
Old Friends
1050f $ 95
Generically called a fruit knife, the form of this 7 7/8" long, 1.5 T. oz, item often goes by the more precise term orange knife. This example is by Whiting in its Heraldic pattern. It is solid sterling silver, including the curved blade with serrated upper edge. Heraldic is a robust design, whose main features are a shield surmounted by a helmet. This has an Old English "M" monogram on the shield area. It also has its original gold wash finish on the blade, front and back, and this remains... Click for details

Lunt "Strawberry" Sterling Spoon with Shell Bowl
Silver: Sterling: Flatware
Old Friends
1049f $ 35
This 5 1/4" long spoon made by Lunt is a novel design and evidently intended for a novel purpose. It has a tubular stem with an open ring at the end of this. There is a cluster of cast and applied strawberry fruit and leaves applied below this. These are faithfully rendered and precisely detailed, clear to the leaves on the backside. Given the presence of fruit, this may have been a jam spoon. It is a bit large for a baby spoon, but that is another possibility. The bowl is shell form, 1 1/... Click for details

Heavy, Large Bright Cut c. 1870 Boston Tongs
Silver: Sterling: Flatware
Old Friends
1048f $ 115
This pair of tongs are substantial. The measure 5 3/4" long, are 1 1/4" wide at the arch, and weigh 1.8 T. oz. The style is without question Boston from the third quarter of the 19th century. This origin and date is confirmed by the retailer's stamp, "Crosby, Morse & Foss," a partnership which dates narrowly from 1869 to 1875. They are also marked "925" for sterling, but less than ten years earlier they would have been to a coin silver standard, which many pieces in this genre are. The arms... Click for details

Blackinton Cherry Blossom Sterling Olive Spoon
Silver: Sterling: Flatware
Old Friends
1047f $ 38
Measuring 6 1/4" long, and modest weight, this olive spoon has an elongated and highly elaborated, pierced bowl. The bowl itself is 2 1/8" by 1 1/8" at the widest. The design is Art Nouveau and portrays a trailing cherry blossom that without the benefit of the pattern name at hand, or astuteness about such matters, might seem to be a wild rose or dogwood. It is in flawless condition and without a monogram or removal. The pattern detail remains sharp and well-defined, and the bowl is free of b... Click for details

Gorham Virginiana Sterling Cream Ladle
Silver: Sterling: Flatware
Old Friends
1043f $ 55
Measuring 5" long, this cream ladle is smaller than the typical size in Gorham's Virginiana, which is something less than an inch longer. The oval bowl is 1 1/2" by 1 1/4" and 1/2" deep. It has subtly flanged shoulders, but is otherwise plain. This poppy pattern may be Gorham's most successful full line art nouveau design, and deservedly so. This example is flawless, showing scant signs of use, having a brilliant (hand polished only) finish, and is without a monogram. Marks are lion, anchor... Click for details

Rare Tiffany Vine (Grape) Ice Cream Serving Spoon
Silver: Sterling: Flatware
Old Friends
1039f $ 675
Tiffany's 1872 Vine actually featured a wide array of motifs in the series, of which "Grape" was one of the more popular, and consequently fairly available to today's market. The form of this 9" long, heavy, 3.5 T. oz., serving spoon, however, is not at all common. It is an ice cream server with an unusual bowl. It is documented in William Hood's "Tiffany Silver Flatware/1845 - 1905." He illustrates the identical form right to the size (figure 265, page 178) in conjunction with the Japanese ...
