6 SS Newton (NY?) Choice Sterling Tipt Teaspoons
Silver: Sterling: Flatware
Old Friends
565a $ 55 set
These six, sterling silver teaspoons are slightly over-sized at 6 1/8" long. The four together weigh 4.0 T. oz. They all match, and have the same script "M.E. Rouse." engraving, and are stamped "S.S. Newton." In his book on pseudo hallmarks, John McGrew identifies Newton as a mid 19th century, Winchester (Winstead), Connecticut retailer. The style of these is decidedly New York, and as Winchester is in Litchfield County on the New York border, that connection is plausible. They also have a ... Click for details

This is an early, original example. The word "Sterling" and the Alvin emblem appear in fine lettering on ... Click for details

Old Friends
559a $ 195
This over-sized (9 1/2" long, 3.0 T. oz.), circa 1885, serving spoon might have been intended for a variety of purposes, pudding being a likely one. The handle is plain with a rounded top and a modest amount of bright cutting. There is an "ALF" script monogram on the front and a script "WM" one on the reverse. The bowl, on the other hand, is spectacularly engraved, and a true tour de force of embellishment. The ground of the bowl is a matte finish gold, cut to a mirror finish on the silver. ...
