The story of Gaylord Silvercraft is close to fabled. A google search will yield a great deal of background about this arts and crafts line produced at the Gaylord (Wallingford, Connecticut) Tuberculosis Sanatorium. The workshop was established and supervised by William Waldo Dodge and his wife, beginning in 1923 and lasting into the early 1940's. Gorham's Henry II is a mirror of English heraldic elements. The central feature of the design is a staunch lion set midway up the shank. This is surrounded by scrolling, acanthus leaves, and a crown like cap on the end of the handle. This is an old, original, 3 3/4" long, master salt spoon. It is stamped Shreve, Crump & Low for the Boston retailer. Other marks are a lion, anchor, G, Sterling, and Patent 1900. There is a script "BTH" monogram. This sterling silver large beef fork is 7 7/8" long with a serving area that is 3 1/4" by 2". The pattern is Fessenden's late 19th century McKinley, which is an art nouveau floral design. There is no monogram or monogram removal. The condition is excellent. There is no polishing wear, the finish is lustrous, and the tines are free of bends or burrs. Light weight, measuring from handle-to-handle, creamer= 5-1/8" and 2-3/8" tall to top of rim; sugar= 5-1/2" and 2-3/8" tall to top of rim. Both in very good condition, but in need of cleaning. It's age is self-documenting, based on the Old English "E" monogram and "1906" date engraved on the reverse. The condition is outstanding. The tines are even and pointed, and retain their original gold wash. The design is well-articulated, with clear, crisp detail. Marks are the Whiting lion and the word Sterling.

At 8 1/8" long, and with 3/4" deep bowl, this solid weight item in Towle's Old Colonial is a preserve spoon. It is an older piece, with the faceted bowl, and rippled flanged shoulders for which this pattern is noted. The bowl is inscribed with an Old English "L" in the center of the bowl. Marks are the Towle emblem, 925/1000, Sterling, and Pat. 1895. The condition is flawless, free of dings, dents, or burrs in the bowl, and a fine finish overall.
