Unusual Durgin Pierced Sterling Sugar Spoon
Silver: Sterling: Flatware
Old Friends
470b $ 48
This 6 1/8" long, sterling silver sugar spoon made by Durgin has a singular character. The style is difficult to characterize, as it has an arts & crafts manner, with hand cut piercing. The openwork end has an overall Chippendale look, although the trefoil rosette and arch at the top imply Gothic Revival. There is a central rib running down the shank, both front and backsides, and a rattail extending onto the bowl. It is a heavy item, offering more heft to the hand than even the 1.2 T. oz. w... Gorham No. 56 (Narragansett Style) Almond Spoon
Silver: Sterling: Flatware
Old Friends
469b $ 275
Some years ago, The Magazine Antiques published an article about Gorham's fabled Narragansett line of flatware. That pattern is singularly distinctive, and incorporates a variety of shell forms cast from actual examples found, appropriately, in Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island. Since that article appeared, other items that Gorham produced that are similar to Narragansett, in that they incorporate natural shell and other components, are frequently (mis)identified as Narragansett. This 6 1/8" l... Click for details

Gorham Twist (No. 14) Sterling Butter Fork (Pick)
Silver: Sterling: Flatware
Old Friends
467b $ 85
This 6 1/2" long item appears in Gorham's 1888 catalog listed as a butter fork (see image 2 for a facsimile of the page). This form today is more commonly known as a butter pick, but it is interesting to note its original nomenclature. It is an imaginative design, with a wire core enveloped by two additional twisting wires that broaden at the end into a heart shaped design. The piece is in flawless condition. It is stamped with the Gorham lion, anchor, G, Sterling, and the number 14.

John Wendt's (New York) Florentine is, as the name avers, a Renaissance Revival design that was produced in the 1870's. This example is a 6 1/4" long sugar spoon with a shell bowl. There is no monogram or removal. The condition is very good. The pattern remains sharply defined, with no polishing wear. Tiffany (Gorham) Medallion Sterling Sugar Spoon
Silver: Sterling: Flatware
Old Friends
463b $ 110
In the mid 1860's, Gorham was a major supplier to Tiffany's retail operation, and this 6" long sugar shell is an example of that relationship, as evidenced by the marks on the reverse. Gorham was the sole source of this, or any, Medallion pattern for Tiffany. All work for Tiffany was done to a Sterling standard, and that is the case with this. The figure is a helmuted warrior, perhaps Mars. The reverse is monogrammed "S.V.M." in Old English lettering. The bowl has a matte finish with remain... Click for details

Gorham Wreath Sterling Sauce Ladle
Silver: Sterling: Flatware
Old Friends
456b $ 40
Gorham's Wreath is an early 20th century design that is so stylized that it seems it ought to have a specific referent. The wreath is an oval comprised of bell flowers. They are joined at the bottom and have two trailing arms. The top is surmounted by a fleur-de-lis style plume. The detailing is highly raised, and appears to have been applied rather than die struck. The end of the handle is squared, while there is a central rib on the reverse. The bowl has flanged shoulders and a gold wash... Click for details
