Circa 1868 Sterling Silver Master Butter Knife
Silver: Sterling: Flatware
Old Friends
671a $ 45
This sterling silver master knife is some large, 7 3/4" long, and solid weight. It is a mystery pattern, although quite similar to Gorham's "Italic" of 1868. It is a plain design, with a pedimented end, and an Old English "P" monogram on the reverse. The style looks as if it wants to be coin silver, but it is stamped "Sterling." It is also marked "J.N.L. & Co." There was a "J.N. Lewis & Co." of York, So. Carolina, but it is inconclusive whether this traces to that firm. The condition is ve... Click for details

Rand & Crane (Boston) Heavy "Shell" Sterling Crumber
Silver: Sterling: Flatware
Old Friends
664a $ 165
Rand & Crane (circa 1896-1922) were something of an enigmatic Boston retailer. Their product sources are uncertain, but their offerings were always to a high standard. This is the case with this 8 3/4" long, immensely heavy, 5.7 T. oz., solid sterling silver crumber. The design is a pointed antique with a shell end. Several makers produced shell end designs, but the prevailing examples all had rounded ends. This design apparently stands on its own. While the rest of the piece is entirely p... Click for details

This 6 1/8" long, sterling silver spoon is numbered 441. It is one of a series produced by Gorham and illustrated in that company's 1898 catalog. The line began before that date, however, as this piece bears an 1888 date symbol on the reverse. These spoons all share several common characteristics. One is the density and intricacy of their designs, all set in high relief. A second feature is the size, slightly larger than a teaspoon, and heavy weight, 1.2 T. oz. in this instance. This size ... 12 Elegant Belgium Large Silver Tablespoons
Silver: Sterling: Flatware
Old Friends
614a $ 325 set
European marks can be enigmatic to those unfamiliar with them, and that is the case with these twelve matching spoons. The marks (all illustrated in the accompanying images) vary slightly from piece to piece, but each piece does have a Belgium minerva head. The assay mark is for a 950 silver standard (purer than sterling) and date from the middle third of the 19th century. These are large, 8 5/8" long, and in American nomenclature would classify as a tablespoon. By European practice, however... Click for details
