click for details
Each of these four identical individual salts and spoons consists of a pot-shaped salt that measures 1 1/4" in diameter and stands 5/8" high. This is accompanied by a 2" long spoon in the Commonwealth (1908) pattern by Watson, which is a matching design to the salt. The spoons are marked with the Watson emblem, while the salts are marked with the wreath emblem of Wilcox and Wagoner which was a division of Watson. All pieces are marked sterling, and the salts carry the model number 3527. Ther... Click for details

Lunt Chippendale Sterling Jelly Server
click for details
Dating from the early 20th century, Lunt's Chippendale design is a reticulated pattern that fully mirrors the open fretwork that might be seen on a piece of Chippendale furniture. This example is a 5 3/8" long, .6 T. oz., jelly or cheese server. It has an asymmetrical flat serving area with a raised and scalloped upper edge. The item is in excellent condition, with no signs of wear save for normal surface scratches on the serving end. There is no monogram or removal. Marks are the Lunt embl... Click for details

Whiting Heraldic All Sterling Large Fruit Knife
click for details
Generically called a fruit knife, the form of this 7 7/8" long, 1.5 T. oz, item often goes by the more precise term orange knife. This example is by Whiting in its Heraldic pattern. It is solid sterling silver, including the curved blade with serrated upper edge. Heraldic is a robust design, whose main features are a shield surmounted by a helmet. This has an Old English "M" monogram on the shield area. It also has its original gold wash finish on the blade, front and back, and this remains... Click for details

Lunt "Strawberry" Sterling Spoon with Shell Bowl
click for details
This 5 1/4" long spoon made by Lunt is a novel design and evidently intended for a novel purpose. It has a tubular stem with an open ring at the end of this. There is a cluster of cast and applied strawberry fruit and leaves applied below this. These are faithfully rendered and precisely detailed, clear to the leaves on the backside. Given the presence of fruit, this may have been a jam spoon. It is a bit large for a baby spoon, but that is another possibility. The bowl is shell form, 1 1/... Click for details

Heavy, Large Bright Cut c. 1870 Boston Tongs
click for details
This pair of tongs are substantial. The measure 5 3/4" long, are 1 1/4" wide at the arch, and weigh 1.8 T. oz. The style is without question Boston from the third quarter of the 19th century. This origin and date is confirmed by the retailer's stamp, "Crosby, Morse & Foss," a partnership which dates narrowly from 1869 to 1875. They are also marked "925" for sterling, but less than ten years earlier they would have been to a coin silver standard, which many pieces in this genre are. The arms... Click for details

Blackinton Cherry Blossom Sterling Olive Spoon

Blackinton Cherry Blossom Sterling Olive Spoon
click for details
Measuring 6 1/4" long, and modest weight, this olive spoon has an elongated and highly elaborated, pierced bowl. The bowl itself is 2 1/8" by 1 1/8" at the widest. The design is Art Nouveau and portrays a trailing cherry blossom that without the benefit of the pattern name at hand, or astuteness about such matters, might seem to be a wild rose or dogwood. It is in flawless condition and without a monogram or removal. The pattern detail remains sharp and well-defined, and the bowl is free of b... Click for details

Gorham Virginiana Sterling Cream Ladle
click for details
Measuring 5" long, this cream ladle is smaller than the typical size in Gorham's Virginiana, which is something less than an inch longer. The oval bowl is 1 1/2" by 1 1/4" and 1/2" deep. It has subtly flanged shoulders, but is otherwise plain. This poppy pattern may be Gorham's most successful full line art nouveau design, and deservedly so. This example is flawless, showing scant signs of use, having a brilliant (hand polished only) finish, and is without a monogram. Marks are lion, anchor... Click for details

Rare Tiffany Vine (Grape) Ice Cream Serving Spoon

Rare Tiffany Vine (Grape) Ice Cream Serving Spoon
click for details
Tiffany's 1872 Vine actually featured a wide array of motifs in the series, of which "Grape" was one of the more popular, and consequently fairly available to today's market. The form of this 9" long, heavy, 3.5 T. oz., serving spoon, however, is not at all common. It is an ice cream server with an unusual bowl. It is documented in William Hood's "Tiffany Silver Flatware/1845 - 1905." He illustrates the identical form right to the size (figure 265, page 178) in conjunction with the Japanese ... Old Gorham Imperial Chrysanthemum Long Salad Servers

Old Gorham Imperial Chrysanthemum Long Salad Servers
click for details
Virtually every manufacturer offered a Chyranthemum design in the late Victorian period, with the three outstanding ones coming from Tiffany, Durgin, and this version by Gorham called Imperial Chrysanthemum. There are various iterations of the blossoms and leaves tracing the length of the handle and onto the bowl where there is a single, boldly set flower. This all shows especially well in the large scale of this matched pair of long salad servers. The spoon measures 10 1/4" long and the fork... Click for details

Baker Manchester Poppy Sterling Cream Ladle with Spout
click for details
Poppy was a popular floral motif during the Art Nouveau period, and Baker Manchester's c. 1900 interpretation of that theme is quite successful. It is expressive, has a highly contoured surface, and is free flowing. This example is a 5 3/8" long, modest weight, cream or sauce ladle. It is the less common of two forms of this, being the variant that has a side pouring spout. The bowl shows very slight traces of an original gold wash. It is in perfect condition, without a monogram or removal,... Click for details

Blackinton Helena Sterling Serving Fork and Spoon
click for details
This serving fork and spoon may be used as a pair for salad or as individual pieces. They were made by Blackinton and date from the turn of the 20th century. The pattern, Helena, remains decidedly Victorian in style, incorporating beading, fancy scrolls, and any number of flourishes offered in balanced detail. The fork measures 8 11/16" long and has a scrolled shoulder, four-tine serving end. The spoon measures 8 3/16" long and has a ribbed bowl with scalloped and flanged shoulders. The pie... Heavy Shiebler Leaf & Scroll Sterling Knife

The pattern on this flat-handled, 7 5/8" long, and weighty, 1.5 T. oz., solid sterling knife is non-standard, but then Shiebler (the maker of this) designs are often their own creations. It may be a master butter or individual fish knife. The handle features a robust acanthus leaf with scroll and beading detail. These are classical elements, but offered in Shiebler's idiomatic way, with a drift toward the aesthetic. The scrolling, for example, is asymmetrical and evokes a wave, with this the... AEL "Dogwood" Cast Sterling Tomato Server

This tomato server measures 7 5/8" long, has a serving area that is 2 1/2" in diameter, and weighs just under 2.0 T. oz. It is stamped "A E L" and "Sterling." The maker is elusive, with one other elaborate cast piece with this mark readily found on the internet, and a quite similar cast design retailed by Boston's Shreve, Crump and Low. This is a New England estate item, with a history in the last family dating to about 1945, although it may have been older than that then. It is cast, with t... Click for details

Gorham Florentine Sterling Olive Fork

Having two slightly splayed tines with scalloped inner edges, this 5 11/16" long item is an olive or pickle fork. The pattern is Gorham's turn of the 20th century Florentine. This is a highly expressive and stylistic design that features a bearded Renaissance figure at the end of the handle. This is accompanied by additional elaborate thematic elements. It is a weighty pattern and that is reflected in this. The piece is in flawless condition and without a monogram or removal. Marks are lio... Click for details
