Whiting's Japanese is from the same 1870's period as Tiffany's pattern of the same name (later Audubon). Wood & Hughes and Wendt also produced quite similar designs. This sterling silver baby spoon was made by Gorham circa 1895. It is stamped with a lion, anchor, G hallmark, the word Sterling, and number H 116. It is 3 3/4" long overall, and has a loop, finger grip handle. This features an elaborate design that includes flowers extending into the bowl, and a winged cherub or cupid figure on the lower shank. This set of six, 6 3/4" long, sterling silver place aka dessert aka oval soup spoons are in Gorham's Hindostanee pattern. Hindostanee is an 1870's Persian or Moresque style pattern, somewhat akin to Gorham's Renaissance Revival Raphael. They all have an Old English "J" or "I" monogram. This 8 7/8" long spoon in Durgin's Iris is a somewhat uncommon item. It is a preserve spoon, with an elongated, 3 1/4" x 1 3/4", plum-shaped bowl. The bowl is plain, absent the decoration that appears on such as berry and salad servers. The retailer on this was Philadelphia's Bailey, Banks & Biddle. These six, sterling silver teaspoons are slightly over-sized at 6 1/8" long. The four together weigh 4.0 T. oz. They all match, and have the same script "M.E. Rouse." engraving, and are stamped "S.S. Newton." In his book on pseudo hallmarks, John McGrew identifies Newton as a mid 19th century, Winchester (Winstead), Connecticut retailer. This over-sized (9 1/2" long, 3.0 T. oz.), circa 1885, serving spoon might have been intended for a variety of purposes, pudding being a likely one. The handle is plain with a rounded top and a modest amount of bright cutting. There is an "ALF" script monogram on the front and a script "WM" one on the reverse.
