Fessenden Art Nouveau Floral Sterling Sugar Spoon

This sterling silver sugar spoon is in an art nouveau floral (poppy?) design produced by Fessenden in the first decade of the 20th century. It is a delicate 5 3/8" long, and is relatively light weight. It is double die struck, meaning the pattern appears on both the front and backsides of the handle. The bowl is an elongated ovoid shape, has scalloped shoulders, and chased detailing in the bowl. The condition is flawless. Marks are the Fessenden emblem, Sterling, and 925/1000.

Wood & Hughes' Angelo is an 1870's Renaissance Revival desgin. This example is a 5 13/16" long sugar spoon. The bowl has coffered shoulders and an engraved interior. The reverse of the handle is monogrammed "J.F." in a feathered script. The condition is excellent. The pattern detail and engraving remains well-defined, free of polishing wear. The basic form of this 6 1/8" long silver sugar shell was widely produced, and particularly so in New England where this likely originated (it is marked on Sterling, with no maker's designation). The engraving on this, however, does distinguish the piece from more common examples. It is a floral interpretation, the blossom of which is ragged or hairy, and the leaves long and trailing. Josephine is a late 19th century designed originated by Providence, Rhode Island's Howard Silver Company (this firm was later absorbed into Mt. Vernon Silver Co.) This particular piece is a 6" long youth fork that was retailed by Boston's Smith, Patterson Co. (so stamped on the reverse). There is no monogram or monogram removal. This sterling silver teaspoon is an older example of Gorham's popular Strasbourg. It is a large 5 7/8" long, and heavy, 1.0 T. oz.
