Mermod & Jaccard Sterling Silver Match Safe with an embossed man’s face, three ladies faces, and embossed with surrealistic clouds of smoke wreathing around them in very good detail. Stamped “MERMOD & JACCARD”, on the outside lip of the inside front flange followed with a barely discernable engraved “436865”?? I think. On the opposite flange on the inside it is stamped “STERLING”, and also either “1B547”, or 1B647”. The back surface seems to be monogrammed but can’t make out the letters. It coul... set of six in original felt lined box, .800 standard, maker Fabbrica Argenteria Fiorentina circa 1935, total weight 3.86 oz. Troy, excellent condition, no monogram. These are well modelled and well executed. Each putto is full figural front and back. Though the little folks are cast from the same mold, each is carrying a different dish: soup, fish, fowl, eggplant, grapes, salad, and of course wine. An altogether charming way to guide your guests at table.

no, not that kind of a cat box, but a snuff box with "trap door" opening and secret compartment, 2 1/4 by 1 7/8 by 1 inches, weight 2.27 oz. Troy, marked with Chinese ideograms only (please see 5th photo).

In terms of construction, this is, not alas a first rate object. The edges don't quite meet up flush, the hinge is on the exterior rather than integral, and there are also a few minor bits of waviness on the fron... Click for details

This 2 1/8" by 1 1/2" by 7/16" matchbox or vesta was made by Gorham and is amply marked. It is stamped with a lion, anchor, G, Sterling, the model number 760, the date symbol for 1889, and the word Copyrighted. This item appears in the 1889 and 1890 Gorham catalogs (see image 2). Graff, Washburne & Dunn Art Nouveau Ster. Letter Opener

This c. 1900 sterling silver letter opener was made by Graff, Washburne & Dunn and shows that company's capacity in articulating the Art Nouveau style. It is solid sterling silver, measuring 7 5/8" long and weighing a substantial 2.6+ T. oz. The end of the handle features a cast poppy and leaves. This element is solid, not hollow, and fully conveys in its flowing design all the sinuous freedoms encompassed by the Art Nouveau movement. The blade is engraved with a flowing script "MJW" monogra... Click for details

Gorham 19th Century Solid Sterling Silver Bell
click for details
This silver bell stamped Sterling, with Gorham's lion, anchor, G mark, and a date symbol for 1898, is unusual for two reasons. One, silver bells were more frequently than not made in plate rather than sterling as good tonal quality was easier to achieve (this one has a pleasant ring nonetheless). Secondly, it is stamped with the number 7822 in a rectangle, which in the Gorham system indicated a special order or prototype item. (See noted Gorham authority Sam Hough's discussion of the company ... Click for details

“BOW-WOW-WOW”, & “PUSSYCAT” in raised letters on either clasp of this very old bib holder. There is also a pic of a barking dog on one, and a smugly smiling kitty wearing a bib at his plate on the other end. Each of the clasps has a makers mark of “P & B” with each letter stamped within a separate stamped heart as in Paye & Baker, and each is also marked “STERLING” above the makers mark. Both clasps work well with springs that feel strong, and the chain, which I believe is also sterling is in ve... Click for details

Shiebler made for Tiffany Sterling Shoe Horn

This c. 1900 5" long, 1.3+ T. oz., solid sterling silver shoe horn has a double provenance. It was made by the highly regarded silver and jewelry manufacturer, George Shiebler, and retailed by Tiffany & Co. whose name needs no footnote. Markings for both firms, plus the word Sterling and the number 5838 are stamped on the reverse. Characteristic of Shiebler, the design is imaginative and individualistic. It is a series of entwined scrolls and ringlets suggestive of a woven fabric or conversely... Click for details
