Syracuse's Joseph Seymour's pattern flatware is well-documented and the inventory does not include the "Thistle" design on this 5 1/2" long, just touching 1.0 T. oz., teaspoon. It is thereby an unexpected rarity, and doubly so because of its impressively artful portraiture.

Originally produced in 1903, Frank Smith's "Lion" has been reissued in recent years. There are enough differences between the two periods, though, that they are essentially distinct patterns.

The short of it is that the earlier production evidences far more detail and clarity of design than latter pieces.

These distinctions are evident on this 5 3/4" long, just under 1.0 T. oz., teaspoon. Quick distinctions can be seen in the backside, torso area of the lion. On older items this area... Click for details
