Shiebler "Floral & Foliate" Filigree Sterling Silver 4179 Stamp Box
Silver : Sterling : Smalls
Old Friends
3782f $185.00
Decorative and utilitarian desk items, stamp boxes evoke nostalgic reminders of a measured and purposeful lifestyle that no longer exists. They served the useful purpose of protectively holding stamps when they were issued singly. This likely late 19th century example was made by George Shiebler, whose "winged S" emblem, the word "Sterling," and model number "4179" are imprinted on the underside. Rectangular with two compartments, its measurements are very symmetrical, 2" long by 1" wide... Click for details

Cast and open, the handle is rococo in design, featuring an asymmetrical array of scrolls, blossoms, and leaves. The blade is... Click for details

Gorham No. 456 Sterling Silver Small Footed Dish
Silver : Sterling : Hollowware
Old Friends
3451f $75.00
This 4" round, 5/8" high, just under 2.0 T. oz. shallow dish resting on four ball feet presents as rather mysterious in purpose, save that it is identified in Gorham's 1890 catalogue (see image 2). Stamped with the company "lion, anchor, G", emblem, "Sterling," and model number "456" on the underside, it is actually part of a desk ensemble, namely the underplate, or as labeled, a tray, for a multi-lobed ink bottle. Original purpose aside, it is attractive in its own right,... Click for details
