Fine late Victorian English brass postal scale with malachite base by the renowned firm of Sampson Mordan & Co. These are particularly handsome because of the malachite which sits atop a larger piece of black marble. Looks great on a desk. Mordan was known, among other things, for making micromosaics and other items from colorful marbles. Ordinary Mordan postal scales are fairly common but the marble inlay ones are scarce. A wonderful ornate magnifying glass by Silver Scenes,Wales UK. Measures 8 1/2" long. Nice and powerful magnifier. Magnifier glass has a diameter of 3 1/4". Handle has all over, front and back ornate grapes vines and leaves work. I believe it is silver plated. Nice heavy quality piece comes in the satin lined box it originally was sold in.
