There's an inscription engraved on the front, and if you don't clean it, it will probably never be noticed. It reads, "Best Wishes, Van Buren Staff, 1982." This is a great old (1982 we assume) Solid Brass Teacher's Desk Bell -- what fun for the Teacher of any age students. This offering is for a great Sheaffer White Dot desk set. The black base is either onyx or marble and in excellent condition. Base measures 5" x 3.5". The pen has a 14kt gold nib and it is the "Lifetime" variety that was first introduced in 1943. I am not sure of the age of this set but believe it was at least prior to 1970. I am really not sure what you would call this. I have searched and couldn't find anything like it on the Internet or in any antique stores. My antique dealer friend didn't know what to call it either. Maybe you will look at it and realize what it is and let me know! It features a round hole, it has a slot where any excess ink would flow down to the hole where the ink is stored. It also has two grooves along the side that I think are meant to hold extra nibs.

This walnut Barlow desk set contains what appears to be a scrimshaw medallion with a pair of mustangs racing across the prairie. The gold-tone writing pen has been tested and works fine. The base measures approximately 5" X 3 3/8". The set is in the original box. We have not been able to locate another set like this, so we cannot put an accurate date on the piece.
