This 8 5/8" long, nearly 1.2 T. oz. berry spoon, marked only "Coin," with no maker's or retailer's identifier, is emblematic of mid 19th century American silver design.

It is both a sophisticated and stylish item. Slender in look, it has an elongated bowl, a twist stem, and arched, flat handle with a notched tip. The margin of this has delicate roulette engraving.

There is no monogram or removal.

Offered is a good American coin silver (many would consider this Southern coin silver) teaspoon bearing the maker's mark of F. J. Posey. Frederick J. Posey (1815-1881) was active as a silversmith, jeweler, watch and clockmaker in Hagerstown, Maryland from at least 1842 until after 1860. He also reportedly worked as a watch and clockmaker in Shepherdstown, Virginia in 1842. This teaspoon is lightly engraved with a period script monogram and has a legible maker's mark. Offered is a fine and rare American coin silver dessert spoon by little-known Harrisburg, Pennsylvania silversmith and jeweler George W. McCalla. McCalla was working in Harrisburg in the 1860s, but his origins are unknown, at least to me. He died at the age of 46 in 1866 after suffering from a debilitating illness for some time. His wife carried on with the shop and its operations for another three years, until closing the business at the end of 1869. This dessert spoon measures about 7 1/4... Click for details

Offered is a rare and fine early American coin silver teaspoon by little-known Fincastle and Liberty, Virginia silversmith Charles Aunspaugh (b. 1799, d. 1887). Aunspaugh lived and worked most of his life in Fincastle (and was even apparently postmaster of Fincastle for a period of time), though he spent a few years (possibly in partnership throughout) in Liberty. Little is known about Aunspaugh's life, and only a few teaspoons are known as evidence of his work. This spoon probably dates to... Click for details

Offered is a very scarce and interesting example of the American coin silver wares made by early 19th Century silversmith, jeweler and clock and watch maker William W. Bell (1777-1842). In addition to his career as a silversmith, Mr. Bell also had other pursuits - he is noted as having been an officer (Ensign) in the War of 1812, and he was the appointed Postmaster for Gettysburg from 1829-41. Bell appears to have worked his entire career (about 1800 to his death in 1842) in Gettysburg, and... Click for details

Fine Maryland? Tablespoon, Maker's Mark & Union Shield

Offered is a fine American coin silver table spoon circa 1825-50, marked "Jacob" in italicised letters in a conforming punch, with pseudo-hallmarks or manufacturer's marks of a Union shield and the letter "S". I've not come across a Union shield mark like this before, but think it is likely the work of a Maryland silversmith. George Jacob of Baltimore may be a possibility, but there may be other candidates. This piece has no monogram or sign of erasure. It measures about 8 7/8 inches in... Click for details

This solid sterling silver item measures 8" long and has a flat, round serving end. It is a robust piece, having a thick shank and weighs an exceptionally heavy 3.4 T. oz.

Functionally it may be a hot cake lifter or an unpierced tomato server. In either case, it is an impressive piece.

The pattern is "Newport Shell," which is a beaded edge design with a shell terminus. This is an old example, not one of the later production pieces produced by Towle. It is marked "925/1000,"... Click for details
