Wallace produced several Art Nouveau floral patterns in the early 20th century, of which "Peony" stands in a category by itself. It is exceptionally heavy, has three dimensional intaglio (meaning cut in) and upraised surfaces, embodies a liquid look, and is highly expressive.

This example is an 8 1/4" long, and consistent with the line, weighty at nearly 2.8 T. oz., medium sized cold meat fork. The serving end has four straight tines.

The handle is inscribed with a feathered script "M"... Click for details

Stamped "Tiffany & Co. Makers," "Sterling Silver," "925-1000," and with a lower case "m," this master salt was put into production in 1902 as indicated by the model number "15251."

This was a period when Tiffany made reproduction items or designs inspired by older, especially English Georgian, holloware, and that is the case with this piece. It is round, cauldron shaped, and stands on three pad feet with acanthus leaf sprays where the legs are attached.

Patented in 1903, "Nuremburg" appears to have borrowed some of the body of skills that generated such other enduring Alvin Art Nouveau designs as "Raphael," and "Old Orange Blossom," but takes those elements in a different direction.

The central feature of the pattern is a satyr's face that occupies the portion just below the reserve located on the slightly upturned end of the handle. Such imagery may be connected to 16th sculpture subjects associated with this German city.

This spoon measures an unusual 7 7/8" long and is weighty at 2.1 T. oz.

A "Chinese Export" piece, it is stamped with four pseudo hallmarks used by "Wongshing," aka "Wong Shing," located in Canton c. 1810-35 according to one source, and 1820-60 by another source.

Silver standards vary for Export silver, but it broadly conforms to sterling.

Export is generally derivative of English design, and that is true for this which is Georgian in manner, with a down-turned, reverse tipt end, and... Click for details

Early (c. 1760-80) Coin Silver Spoon with Maker's Mark BB (Perhaps)

Offered is a very early early (circa 1760-80) American coin silver tea or coffee spoon that appears to have a maker's mark of BB, for which there would be several candidates. This piece measures about 4 1/2 inches in length and weighs about 10 grams. This spoon has some condition issues in that there is a fissure on the front stem from the stress of where the maker's mark was struck, and the spoon has been buffed. There are also some planishing marks visible on the end of the underside of the... Click for details

Lovely Crested English Sterling Cauldron Salt and Matching Salt Spoon

Offered is a bit of a survivor - a Victorian English sterling silver cauldron salt cellar, that retains its original matching salt spoon. This salt cellar and spoon are fully hallmarked for London, 1867-68, and bear the maker's mark of Robert Harper (biographical information below). The armorial on the salt cellar is well executed and appears to be a chained bear; the spoon has an amazingly tiny matching engraved crest. Superb Set of Six Fiddle & Shell Pattern Spoons by Jesse Owen, Phila.
click for details
Offered is an excellent and rare example of the work of Jesse Owen of Philadelphia, working in that city in the late 1830s and 1840s. There were actually several individuals named Jesse Owen in Philadelphia, and Hollan's "Philadelphia Silversmiths" accidentally put the picture of this mark with the Jesse Owen who was a refiner by about 1805 and disappears from the listings by 1817. It is unlikely these spoons were made by that man, but rather by the Jesse Owen working at 167 N. 2nd between... Click for details
