J.S. MacDonald, Baltimore, Engraved
click for details
Some sources list Baltimore's "J.S. MacDonald," working from the 1880s through at least the early 1900s, as a plate maker, but sterling examples stamped with the firm's name also exist.

This 8 3/8" long, just under 1.6 T. oz., berry spoon is a case in point. It is imprinted "Sterling" and "J.S. MacDonald."

The pattern is an engraved "Lily," which is more accurately a "lily of the valley," and is one of several variations of the same theme made by numerous manufacturers. This work,... Click for details

Crested Georgian English Sterling Silver Fish Slice, Circa 1802

Offered is a nice George III English sterling silver fish server fully hallmarked for London, 1802 and made by a maker using the mark SI or IS. This piece has a nice period engraved armorial of a rooster and clear, well-struck marks. It measures just a little under 12 inches in length and weighs about 128 grams. Condition is fair, as it has some surface wear from a lot of polishing (though not a machine buffing, at least in the recent past), probably from someone using a little to much elbow... Rare Early Marietta, Ohio Coin Teaspoon by David Bush Anderson, Sr.

Offered is a rare early American coin silver teaspoon attributed to David Bush Anderson, Sr. of Marietta, Ohio, working in that town circa 1817-54. This spoon dates to about 1817-25 by style, and the mark is a crude ANDERSON in a serrated rectangular punch. This mark is attributed by Ohio collectors to David Bush Anderson, Sr., though this has not been published so far as I know. If you have a different attribution, I would welcome the information. I have found a few spoons bearing this mark... Click for details

Westervelt
click for details
A prominent name in the second half of 19th century Hudson River Valley silver manufacturing, John L. Westervelt was located in Newburgh, New York.

Dating from the 1850s, this example of his work is a 6 1/2" long, just under .9 T. oz., sugar spoon, imprinted on the backside with Westervelt's three part "star, lion, D" hallmark. The absence of a retailer's stamp suggests this tracks directly to the maker.

It has a broad, "Tipt" pattern handle and a shell bowl.

There is a feathered... Click for details

This piece measures about 4 13/16 inches in length and weighs about 8 grams. Condition is poor as the bowl has some significant dents and crimps (though apparently no tears), and the handle has a ripple at the point of the maker's mark. Let's take a moment to reflect upon why a dealer, or at least Yours Truly, chooses to add an item to inventory.

Over the years, we've handled many many pieces of Martelé, and if you dear reader will forgive me for a bit of crudeness, most of them are "trashed." Specifically, the detail is severely worn away, leaving the beauty of the overall design still appreciable but no longer intact.

Why? Because Gorham made a bit of a bargain with the devil, and used .950 or .9584 silver to... Click for details

A lofty item, this sugar caster, aka muffineer, stands 8" tall on a footed base that is 2 1/2" in diameter. Its substantial 6.8 T. oz. weight is commensurate with its size.

English "Georgian" in style, it has a bulbous body with a tall, fitted sleeve, tiered lid surmounted by an urn shaped finial.

The lid has a series of swirled, patterned piercings offset by fine engraved bands.

The underside is stamped "Norman of London" over "New York," "Sterling," and with the number "10N." ... Click for details
