Tracing to the mid 19th century, this companion bowl and plate are demonstrative of the quality for which Tiffany had already become known, even this early.

The markings tell much of the story of the history of the company. They are "Tiffany & Co., Gold & Silversmiths, 550 Broadway," this last mark commonly referred to as the "Union Square location."

This cluster of identifiers is flanked by an Old English "M" on either side, the model number "262" and order number "1334" in the center.... Click for details

Brown & Shaver, Utica, NY, Coin Silver Sauce or Cream Ladle

Sources indicate that Charles C. Shaver and Henry S. Brown, the makers of this 6 1/2" long, 1.0 T. oz., ladle formed their partnership while both of them were working for Maynard & Taylor, and whose silver portion of that business they bought out to establish their own firm in 1856.

The partnership only lasted two years as Shaver contracted typhoid fever and sold out to Brown, whose interest he bought back in 1863 after recovering from his illness. All this history indicates the "Brown &... Click for details

Standing 2 5/8" high, having a diameter of 2 1/4", a maximum span of 3 3/8" to the end of the handle, and weighing 3.1 T. oz., this child's cup was made by William B. Durgin in the late 19th century.

It is a charming period piece inscribed "Marion" over "1880."

This is engraved with two scenes, one of which is particularly appropriate to the name. One portrays a girl with a bonnet on the ground beside her; she is petting a lamb, evocative of the children's rhyme, "Mary Had a Little... Click for details

Silver : Sterling : Flatware

Old Friends
3207f   $70.00

A Renaissance Revival design dating from 1870, John Wendt's "Florentine" is a dense pattern that shows Moorish influences.

This example is a 6 1/8" long, .8 T. oz., sugar, or perhaps small preserve, spoon with two characteristics that set it apart.

One is the flange rim, elaborately shaped bowl with intricate engraving set against a satin matte, gold wash (front and back sides) ground.

The second feature is that it was retailed by the New Orleans firm of "E. Lilienthal," as stamped... Click for details

The style of this 6 1/8" long, .8 T. oz., early pastry, or possibly pickle, fork places it c. 1865.

It is marked "Warner," and "Coin," for Baltimore's Andrew Ellicott Warner, Jr., whose working dates were 1864-93 according to the Baltimore Museum of Art reference "Maryland Silver," so this is an example of his earliest production.

The design is suggestive of work particularly popular in Philadelphia at the time. It has a twisted central shank leading to a flat, scalloped edge, upper... Click for details
