A lofty item, this sugar caster, aka muffineer, stands 8" tall on a footed base that is 2 1/2" in diameter. Its substantial 6.8 T. oz. weight is commensurate with its size.

English "Georgian" in style, it has a bulbous body with a tall, fitted sleeve, tiered lid surmounted by an urn shaped finial.

The lid has a series of swirled, patterned piercings offset by fine engraved bands.

The underside is stamped "Norman of London" over "New York," "Sterling," and with the number "10N." ... Click for details

Rare and Unusual Medallion Coin Silver Handled Cup from Chicago c1866
click for details
Offered is a rare and unusual piece of Chicago coin silver hollowware - medallion coin silver that appears to have been manufactured in Chicago, rather than simply retailed. The manufacturer was "D. & A." and at least a couple of other pieces of hollowware with the same unique cameo medallions from this firm have gone through auction over the years. However, this firm seems to have left few traces, and may have folded quickly. This variety of medallion coin silver did not make Soeffing's book... Click for details

Southern Coin Silver Handled Cup by Henry Semken of Washington, D.C.

Offered is a gorgeous Southern coin silver christening or baby cup by leading Washington, D.C. jeweler Henry Semken (born circa 1825 in Prussia, died in 1895 in D.C.), in business in Washington circa 1855-89. This cup has a clear maker's mark or retailer's mark for Semken, and is very well engraved with the dedication inscription, which is touching. I have rarely seen a piece of coin silver hollowware, especially a handled cup, in better condition. There is little in the way of signs of use... Click for details

Rare Set of 6 Early Maine Coin Silver Spoons by Eleazer Wyer, c1806-14

Offered is a lovely and rare set of six early American coin silver teaspoons by noted Maine silversmith Eleazer (or Eleazar in some accounts) Wyer (b. 1786 - d. 1848), who worked alone in Portland, ME from about 1806 to 1814 (the likely period of these spoons, by style) and then in partnership from 1814 to 1818. He worked alone again from 1818 to 1821, and then in partnership from 1821 to 1835. Wyer was successful and his pieces are occasionally seen - however, this is the first set of six... Early Set of Six Philadelphia Coin Silver Teaspoons - Allen Armstrong

Offered is a nice group of six early American coin silver teaspoons in the Old English Pattern, made by John W. Gethen and retailed by Allen Armstrong, both of Philadelphia. Armstrong was in the gold-and-silversmithing business from about 1806-16 before turning to the general hardware business around 1817. These six spoons each bear Armstrong's retailer's mark, and Gethen's manufacturer's mark. Each is also engraved with a period script monogram of "MJH". These spoons measure between about 6... Set of Four Baltimore Coin Silver Spoons by Charles H. Pepar c1840-60

Offered is a nice example of American coin silver bearing the maker's mark of little-known Baltimore silversmith Charles H. Pepar, who was advertising in the Baltimore Sun in the 1840s. The book "Silver in Maryland" describes his birthdate as about 1812, and notes he was working at least from 1845. The fineness mark of 10.15 on these would not have been seen after about 1860, and the style of these spoons is consistent with the 1840-60 period. Each spoon has a legible maker's mark and a period... Click for details

Offered is a nice Southern coin silver teaspoon bearing the mark of James T. Scott & Co., working in Wheeling, Virginia and later West Virginia circa the mid 1850s through the late 1860s. Mr. Scott and his partners seem to have mostly retailed silver, though this bears only his maker's or retailer's mark, and no manufacturer's marks. In my other listings on the site, I have several other spoons, with different monograms but also found around Wheeling, with James T. Scott & Co.'s mark. This... Click for details

Offered is a fine set of six early Southern coin silver teaspoons by well-known but scarce Washington, DC silversmith and jeweler Seraphim Masi (1797-1884), who was working in DC by about 1820 and who is best known for making many of the skippets (diplomatic seals) for the United States government during the 1820s and later including one for Commodore Perry's expedition to Japan in the 1850s. Masi's work is hard to find and is always good quality. These teaspoons each bear a good clear maker's... Click for details

Coin Silver Pattern Handled Master Butter Knife with Interesting Marks

Offered is a good American coin silver master butter knife bearing manufacturer's marks not firmly attributed by McGrew but perhaps from the New York city area. Like most of the knives in this style, there are some tiny dents and dings in the handle, but there are no major dents and no splits or repairs. The handle is firm and there is no looseness to the pitch inside. This piece has a period engraved script monogram and well-struck marks of a sovereign's head, an anchor and a bird, perhaps... Offered is a good Georgian English sterling silver sauce ladle or gravy ladle with the little-seen mark of Mary and Elizabeth Sumner, working in London. This ladle is fully hallmarked for London, 1810, and bears one the maker's marks known for this partnership, which consisted of mother and daughter. Pieces with female silversmiths' marks are uncommon, and marks denoting two female members of the same family much more so. This serving piece measures about 6 3/4 inches in length and weighs... Southern Coin Silver Tablespoon by Philip L. Reese of Mt. Sterling, KY

Offered is a good example of the maker's mark and work of Philip Louis Reese (1839-1897), a little-known jeweler and silversmith who trained in Cincinnati, Ohio and then commenced in business in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky. He appears to have begun his trade in Kentucky around 1857, and by 1860 was married and prospering. He apparently made and/or sold flatware and julep cups, among other items, though his mark seems to be quite rare - Boultinghouse's "Kentucky Silversmiths" could not find a single...
