A New York City silversmith who worked from the 1830s until his bankruptcy in 1868, Philo B. Gilbert's dies passed on to John C. Cook and George Shiebler, so his work shows up with a variety of marks.

This 8" long, 1.8 T. oz., coin silver ladle bear only his "lion and leopard head" pseudo hallmark, "Patent 1867," and Gilbert's initials "PBG."

Seldom found, John Wendt's "Moresque" is the nameplate pattern for the "Persian Revival," or "Moorish," style that was popular in the United States in the 1870's. Other contemporaneous, well-recognized, examples in this genre include Tiffany's "Persian," and Whiting's "Persian," and Gorham's "Hindostanee."

"Moresque" examples present with slight variations from piece to piece. These variations include the utilization of a plain disc on the handle, set on the front or backside, or on both... Click for details

Offered is a nice New Orleans coin silver tablespoon by Horace E. Baldwin & Co., who had a retail shop on Chartres St. in New Orleans in the 1840s. This piece came with some Alabama silver from an estate in Mobile, and presumably was purchased by the original owner in New Orleans. This pieces measures about 8 5/8 inches in length and weighs about 50 grams. It has a good maker's mark or retailer's mark and period script monograms to the front and back. Offered is an excellent and large gilt sterling silver master salt spoon by William Chawner and fully hallmarked for London, 1819. The large size, ornate decoration and high quality of this piece is typical of this period and consistent with the best English silver of the time. Offered is a very good Georgian English sterling silver OEP sauce or gravy ladle, fully hallmarked for London, 1810 and bearing a maker's mark that is almost certainly for members of the Bateman family (Peter and William), though it is a little rubbed. The armorial or crest is of a long-necked bird that appears to be a mythological beast, emerging from a crown or coronet. It is nicely executed. Catherine Hollan in "Philadelphia Silversmiths" lists William Faber as working by 1828 and joined by sons Charles and William as "Faber & Sons" in 1866, which name and firm lasted until 1887.

Producers of fine silver, much of which demonstrated artful bright cut work, the company also produced this die struck pattern that bears strong similarity to one, also unnamed, produced by George Sharp in the same 1860s period.

The handled cup measures 3" high, has a top diameter of 2 5/8", a maximum span of 3 3/4" to the end of the handle, and a 2 3/16" wide underside. It weighs 4.2 T. oz. There is a script "DMC" monogram on the sidewall.

Made by Gorham about 1900, it combines two styles.

Offered is a lovely early American coin silver tablespoon bearing the full name mark of noted pre-Revolutionary Boston silversmith Zachariah Brigden. This piece should date to the 1750-65 period by style, but could be a bit earlier. It bears a good strike of the full name mark, which appears to match the verified mark on pieces with known provenance, and also has a period engraved block monogram to the reverse.
