Wood & Hughes "Viola" Sterling Silver Preserve Spoon
Silver : Sterling : Flatware

Old Friends
3318f   On Hold

Introduced in 1875, Wood & Hughes' "Viola" incorporates multiple design elements.

These include a dominant Gothic Revival arched structure that comprises the sides and end of the handle, and which in sum resembles a cathedral ceiling. Other components are suggestive of acanthus and palmetto leaves, typical of Greek and Egyptian Revival motifs.

In total it is a well-constructed and balanced design that is thoroughly evocative of its mid-Victorian period.

The bowl on this 6 3/4" long,... Click for details

At 7 1/2" long, and weighing 1.1 T. oz., this item is larger than today's dessert or oval soup, and smaller than a tablespoon. It would have been an individual place piece in its mid 19th century period.

Originally developed as a pickle fork (to be accompanied by a pickle knife), this three tine form is not much to be distinguished from later pie or pastry forks.

A 6 1/4" long, just over .8 T. oz., example, this item is stamped "Geo. Howe.," for a jeweler who worked during the third half of the 19th century, in Lynn, Massachusetts, a city just north of Boston.

It has a "Pointed Antique Tipt" handle that is extensively engraved in a leaf and scroll design. There is a reserve area that... Click for details

Very Early Pair of English Berry Spoons Circa 1700-19 - Thos. Spackman
Silver : Sterling

Cliff Nunn - Antique Silver and Decorative Arts
20171123-05   Sold

click for details
Offered is an unusually early pair of English Britannia standard rattail Hanoverian pattern tablespoons by Thomas Spackman (working circa 1700-19 in London), made by the Victorians into berry spoons. Typically, berry spoons started out as late 18th century spoons, though earlier spoons such as these were also used when available. This pair is very nicely done, and luckily still has a good maker's mark on one spoon. Each spoon measures a little under 8 inches in length, and the pair weighs a... Click for details

Offered is a good heavy mid-Eighteenth Century English sterling silver Hanoverian Pattern tablespoon, engraved with a worn armorial of a hound of some sort, and bearing hallmarks indicating London manufacture. I didn't check the maker's mark, but it should be relatively easy to track down. This piece measures about 8 1/16 inches in length and weighs a good 68 grams or so. Condition is good overall, with some surface wear but good color and no dents, splits or repairs. All in all a fine early... Click for details

English Hanoverian Pattern Tablespoon Crested with a Falcon or Hawk
Silver : Sterling : Flatware

Cliff Nunn - Antique Silver and Decorative Arts
20171123-03   $35.00

Offered is a nice English Georgian sterling silver Hanoverian pattern tablespoon bearing a well-executed period armorial of a hawk or falcon. This piece measures about 8 1/8 inches in length and weighs about 56 grams. Condition is fair at best, as the bowl has been reshaped and the stem may have a well done repair, given that the maker's mark is missing. However, this would make a decent fill-in piece for a set or a server for casual use. The repairs have been done well, and this piece... Click for details

Crested 18th Century English Sterling Silver Sauce Ladle - R. Crossley
Silver : Sterling

Cliff Nunn - Antique Silver and Decorative Arts
20171123-01   $49.50

Offered is a nice early crested Georgian English sterling silver sauce or gravy ladle by noted London silversmith Richard Crossley, fully hallmarked for 1782. The armorial is of what appears to be a lion's paw emerging from a coronet and grasping an escallop (scallop shell); I've not researched the armorial to determine the family, but it is probably traceable. This piece measures about 6 1/2 inches in length and weighs about 52 grams. Condition is fair to good overall, with some surface wear... Click for details
