Waterbury CT circa 1840, length 7 1/4 inches, total Troy weight 6.67 ounces, fine condition, monogrammed "H.A. Shiels" obverse in period script.

Though this mark would appear to be previously unpublished, we are attributing it to Horace, since the only other possible firm might have belonged to Hiram Hotchkiss, who would have been ten or twenty years old when Fiddle Thread was in the height of its popularity.

Measuring 5 7/8" long and weighing just under 1.2 T. oz., this sugar spoon is an example of Whiting's Art Nouveau "Lily" pattern.

It is marked on the handle reverse with the Whiting lion logo, an Old English "O," "Sterling," and on the heel of the bowl "PAT. 1902" and "R'G 1902," all in fine lettering as an old piece would show.

The nearly round, scalloped edge, scrolled interior, bowl extends 1 3/4" back to front and 1 1/2" across and has a subtle satin finish.

Philadelphia Coin Silver Teaspoon by Samuel Hutchinson Ca. 1828-39

Offered is a good American coin silver tea spoon by Philadelphia silversmith Samuel Hutchinson, working in that city circa 1828-39. This teaspoon bears a clear, well-struck maker's mark for Hutchinson, and in this case he was probably the retailer rather than the maker as the spoon also has a floret mark used by John Curry and was probably made by Curry. Like many pieces made by Curry, this has good weight and balance. It measures about 5 7/8 inches in length and weighs about 18 grams. This... Click for details

A 6 3/8" long, just over 1.0 T. oz., piece, this sugar spoon has a generously-proportioned shell form bowl.

Dating circa 1863, it is an example of William B. Durgin's "Medallion." Based on classical figures, this motif was popular among manufacturers of the period.

In his ground-breaking work on this line of flatware published nearly thirty years ago, D. Albert Soeffing identifies this maker's "Medallion" as portraying a right-facing male warrior, without portrait variation. This piece... Click for details

Offered is a very good and early example of an iconic American coin silver pattern - "Ivy" (also known as "Devil's Mask") by Henry Hebbard, and first patented in 1866. A few years after Hebbard's initial introduction of this pattern, the dies and rights were purchased by Whiting, and most pieces in this pattern bear that firm's marks. However, this piece has the manufacturer's mark of Henry Hebbard, and was likely produced in the late 1860s. It also has a period engraved script monogram, and... Click for details

Pair of Irish Provincial Silver Teaspoons Circa 1820

Offered is a good pair of early 19th Century Irish provincial silver teaspoons, probably made in Cork, but marked only STERLING and lacking a maker's mark. These are certainly early 19th Century and Irish, and the specific maker could perhaps be determined by comparing the dies for STERLING used by the various Cork silversmiths. In any event, these teaspoons are nice examples of nearly 200-year old provincial Irish silver that can be used on a day-to-day basis. Each spoon bears an engraved... Click for details
